The Breton Brewing Company is located in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The tasting room is open for brewery tours, growler fills, pints, and entertainment! Breton has quickly become a staple not only in the hometown of Sydney, but also across the province for their offerings of well made everyday craft beer. They brew a core lineup of hoppy ales, crisp lagers, and some fruited sours, and you’ll sometime catch them with a mixed fermentation barrel aged beer from time to time.
Tasting Notes
Black Angus drinks largely as a West Coast style IPA, with big aromas of pine resin, grapefruit, subtle caramel, and orange peel that lead into a smooth, but bitter finish. Maybe not quite as bracingly bitter as some other examples, but if you ask us, that’s not the worst thing in the world.
Method
This West Coast style IPA uses a hop mix of Chinook, Centennial, Cascade and Citra hops. The hop blend is very characteristic of this style, featuring a lot of the “C” hops that are known for their intense aromas and flavours of pine resin, grapefruit, citrus peels, and herbaceousness. Brewed to intentionally be bitter and full of flavour.
Our Thoughts
Admittedly, I’ve slept on this beer for far too long so don’t make the same mistake. Pouring brilliantly clear, the hop bitterness here won’t punch you in the face but it doesn’t feel like it’s lacking it either; hints of grapefruit, dank resin, and slight caramelized malt character that leaves you walking away with the taste of caramelized oranges.
