C.H. Wente came to America in the late 1800s from Hamburg Germany, learned to make wine from a German by the name of Charles Krug in the Napa Valley, and in 1883 established his first 47 acre Estate and Winery. He chose the Livermore Valley as it was famed for its excellent soils and climate. In 1908, C.H. planted the first Chardonnay vines in the Livermore Valley. In 1912, second generation and a UC Davis student, Ernest Wente, persuaded his father and founder, C.H. Wente, to import Chardonnay cuttings from a well-known vine nursery, F. Richter Nursery in Montpellier, France, to the Livermore Valley.
Fast forward to the group of fifth generation winegrowers and Karl, Christine, Jordan, Aly, and Niki Wente are actively working in various roles in the winery from operations, viticulture, and marketing, passionately continuing the family tradition of sustainable farming and producing the best-quality wines.
Tasting Notes
On the nose, aromas of dark fruits like plum and cherry. On the palate, those notes carry through with added fig and boysenberry with added baking spice. Pair with a selection of cheese, grilled vegetables, and/or grilled meats.
Method
Made from 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah, 5% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, and 2% Zinfandel, the grapes come from estate vineyards along the southern hills of the Livermore Valley. All plots were fermented separately in upright stainless steel fermenters and pumped over twice daily and aged for 12 months in a combination of French, American, and neutral oak barrels as well as stainless steel tanks.
