The GlenAllachie Distillery was one of the few post-war distilleries designed by William Delmé-Evans and focused on using gravity-fed methods to reduce energy requirements. The distillery was built in 1967 and sits on the eastern edge of Ben Rinnes mountain where it is rather exposed to the elements. For most of its life, the GlenAllachie Distillery was a production distillery used to produce large quantities of malt whisky for use in blends like Chivas Regal and Clan Campbell. It wasn’t until the 1990s that the distillery saw its first official bottling under its own label.

Tasting Notes

From the distillery: On the nose, bursting with mocha, nutmeg and walnut oil, with notes of heather honey, sweet raisins and dried red berries. On the palate, lashings of cinnamon spice, molasses and honeycomb, followed by ginger and dark chocolate, with hints of nutmeg and fennel on the finish.

Method

The first batch of GlenAllachie 10 Year Old Cask Strength was released following Billy Walker taking the helm of the distillery in 2017. It was matured in American oak, Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso and virgin oak casks, and bottled at 57.2% ABV.

Our Thoughts

Nose: Brown bread, molasses, raisins. Oaky, woody, milk duds, and salt.
Palate: Round, gritty woody mouthfeel; like sucking on caramel candy. It also has some zippy red fruit at the front of the palate.
Finish: Milk chocolate covered cherries with a long, persistant finish.
