Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, it was one of the first 40 wineries in the Napa Valley and since that time has been establishing itself as one of North America’s premier producers of Napa Valley wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today. They were initially known for making premium Merlot, though they produce high quality premium wines from a range of varietals. The winery’s seven estate vineyards are located in alluvial fans of Napa Valley and the much sought after Howell Mountain slopes. Since 2014 the wines are made under the guidance of accomplished head winemaker Renée Ary who started at Duckhorn as an assistant winemaker in 2003 and has been producing knock out wines since that time.
Tasting Notes
This beautiful Chardonnay offers luscious aromas of fresh lemon zest, Mandarin orange, honeysuckle, vanilla and caramel. On the palate, it is silky and rounded, with a creamy mouthfeel that adds depth and richness to the alluring citrus and tropical flavors. The finish is long and refreshing, with bright natural acidity carrying the wine to a vibrant fruit and spice finish.
Method
Decoy Chardonnay benefits from the passion, skill and experience of The Duckhorn Portfolio team. Made from 100% Chardonnay, aged in 100% French oak 30% new, 70% neutral on lees for 8 months with stirring to increase texture and weight.
Our Thoughts
I really enjoyed this Chardonnay and it’s not what I fully expected from a California- in a good way. The nose started out with lovely green apple and citrus, with some caramel and vanilla tertiary notes. The palate is lush and creamy with lots of texture, but the fruit and acidity is still very present; new French oak crates a more elegant body and finish. This is certainly a food wine, I enjoyed it with creamy pesto pasta but it would be great with shelled seafood or creamy risotto. YUM! Two thumbs up.
