The present-day winery of Sequoia Grave and its 24-acre estate vineyard were part of the original Rancho Caymus land grant given in 1836 to George Yount, the area’s first European-American pioneer. Over the years the property changed hands until it was purchased in 1978 by James and Barbara Allen. The following year, the duo opened a winery in a 100-year-old barn beneath a grove of Sequoia trees, and so Sequoia Grove was born.  The 24-acre Sequoia Grove Estate Vineyard and the 50-acre Tonella Estate Vineyard are both located in Rutherford, where the superb climate and gravelly-loam soils impart distinct flavor in the Bordeaux varieties planted there.

Sequoia Grove Winery is proud to be a Certified Napa Green Winery. They observe sustainable farming practices, with minimal intervention in the vineyard and gentle winemaking in the cellar.

Tasting Notes

Notes of blackberry cobbler, plum, and black currant, followed by warm aromatics of fresh tobacco, tamarind, hints of vanilla, and caramelized black fruit.  Silky and bright palate with medium-to-full bodied texture and weight, and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, black plum, and soft red and black stone fruit. Rich tannin, texture, and weight lead to an inviting mouthfeel. The finish is mouthwatering and lengthy with cherry and hints of dark, powdery cocoa, classic in Rutherford-based wines.

Method

The grapes for the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon come from the finest vineyard sites in the best appellations of Napa Valley, including the Sequoia Grove Estate and Tonella Estate Vineyards in Rutherford, as well as select parcels from top growers, including Morisoli and Beckstoffer in Rutherford, Stagecoach in Atlas Peak, Lamoreaux in the Oak Knoll District and Healy in St. Helena. All fruit is hand sorted before undergoing a cold soak followed by inoculation with French yeast strains. Individual wines are fermented in small batches with daily pump-overs. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and is aged for another 18 months in oak before bottling.
