Tasting Notes
Deep-ruby red with purple reflections. The nose combines notes of red fruit, baking spices, white pepper with a hint of well integrated toast and vanilla. The palate full with concentrated flavours of black cherry jam, spice and subtle oak. The finish is long with a beautiful aromatic intensity and velvety tannins. This wine shows elegance and has good aging potential. Enjoy with roasted and grilled meats, lamb and dishes that incoorporate mediterranean herbs and spices.
Method
The 30 hectares of Coudoulet are located just east of the vineyard of Beaucastel on the other side of the A7 motorway. Coudoulet is often considered the baby Beaucastel. The soil here has many similarities to that of Beaucastel; it is made out of Molasse; a seabed covered by diluvial alpine deposits. These pebbles, called “Galets Roulés”, take in the heat during the day and radiate back to the vines at night which promotes ripening and also gives the vines a good start in the Spring.
This wine is a blend of Grenache 40 %, Mourvèdre 30 %, Syrah 20 %, Cinsault 10 %. Each variety is harvested manually and separately, then sorted in the cellar. The harvest is heated to 80°C (skins) and then cooled down to 20°C. Classic maceration occurs in cement tanks for 12 days. Pressing in pneumatic presses. Blending of the different varietals after malolactic fermentation. Ageing in Oak Foudres for 6 months.
