Domaine Montrose is located in the South of France in the Languedoc, a few kilometers from Pézenas and the Mediterranean Sea. Domaine Montrose and its surroundings have been inhabited for millennia. During Antiquity, it was likely a Roman villa. “The Valros Tower” next to the vineyard was a Carolingian necropolis and then a stronghold in the Middle Ages. Ancient underground tanks beneath the wine cellar allude to wine production happening here since the 16th century. The estate has belonged to the Coste family for the last nine generations. The vineyard around the winery is planted on a range of rather unique terroirs.
Domaine Montrose uses lightweight glass and other innovative, practical and environmentally formats like cans and bag-in-box to considerably reduce their carbon footprint.
Tasting Notes
This is an orange wine “light” with has just a hint of that skin contact astringengy making it a good introduction to the world of orange wines. It all of the citrus, sun and spice notes one would expect of a wine born from the Southern French countryside. Light amber colour with lifted citrus aromas and fresh floral aromas reminiscent of orange blossom water and wild roses. The palate is intensely flavoured and fresh showing citrus fruit, light spice and floral notes. There is subtle tannic presence and clean crisp and dry finish. The wine’s lively aromas and palate structure make it an ideal aperitif or partner for fragrant and lightly spicy Asian cuisine or cheese plates.
Method
This orange wine is a blend of 90% Muscat A Petits Grains and 10% Grenache Gris grown in the Languedoc Roussillon and classified as Vin de France. The grapes are destemmed prior to maceration in concrete tanks and undergo traditional vinification 18-24°C with pump overs to obtain an orange color without any bitterness. After 7 days of maceration, the grapes are gently pressed and the free run press juices are separatedly fined. Once clarified, they are blended and aged in tanks for 6 months before bottling.
