Brother and sister Stefano and Marina Girelli, wine entrepreneurs from Trentino, discovered the winemaking region of Sicily and purchased Santa Tresa in 2001.

Santa Tresa (Sicilian dialect for Santa Teresa) is nestled in Vittoria, in the south east of Sicily; their estate encompasses 50 ha of land, 39 ha dedicated to vineyards. When the winery and properties were acquired in 2001, indigenous clones of Frappato, Nero d’Avola, and Grillo were discovered, planted across the existing vineyards. Aside from the abundance of indigenous varieties they already cultivate, an organic, experimental vineyard is used to rediscover other indigenous grapes, with their traditional vines. Within this experimental plot, Albanello and Orisi are grown- ancient varietals that date back to nearly the beginning of winemaking in the region. More recently, the winery has decide to source all their water from a local reservoir, using only natural rainwater for any irrigation. On top of that, green beans are grown and used to make natural fertilizer.

Tasting Notes

Rina Ianca has a bouquet of tropical fruits, with hints of vanilla.  The palate is beautifully balanced between ripe fruit and racy acidity, resulting in a wine which has plenty of character.  Rina Ianca makes an ideal aperitif.  In Sicily, one would enjoy it with Spaghetti alle Vongole (spaghetti with clams).

Method

“Rina Ianca” means “white sand” in Sicilian dialect and refers to the grapes for this wine grow.   The grapes are harvested in mid-September and made from 70% Grillo and 30% Viognier, this wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks for 7-10 days at 18 degrees C. Cold maceration on the skins takes place for 6 hours and the wine is then aged in stainless steel for 4 months and additionally aged in bottle for 1 month. It contains 3.6g/L of residual sugar.

Our Thoughts

Scallops? Yes. Cheese board? Absolutely. Mussels, veggies trays, dips, crostinis? No problem. This wine is your catch-all food pairing white under $30. The added fact that its certified organic makes this wine a total steal. It’s a crisp Grillo and Viognier blend from Sicily. Bright but with lovely ripeness, it has notes of peach and citrus with a mineral backbone. There’s nothing not to like here, so let this wine help make your entertaining easy!
