The Grattamacco winery was founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavalleri and his wife Paola Cavallari. Located between the towns of Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. Grattamacco was the second wine estate in Bolgheri, after Sassicaia (which as of 2013 has its own appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC). This certainly speaks to the significance and quality of this small Tuscan region and its wines.
In 2002 Piermario sold the estate to Claudio Tipa, a native Sicilian and former industrialist and founder of Collemassari Wine Estates. Claudio Tipa has an enviable wine empire; owning the renowned Tuscan wine estates, Poggio di Sotto and Tenuta San Giorgio in the Montalcino region and Colle Massari in the Maremma region. His wife Maria and sister Maria-Iris work alongside him.
Grattamacco is located on a hill between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri and enjoys a breathtaking panorama of the Tuscan coast. The farm extends over 80 hectares, of which a good 29 hectares are planted with vines and fourteen with olives. Surrounded by 1,200 hectares of woodland, the estate is considered a model for the entire wine-growing zone.
Tasting Notes
Distinct minerality, hints of Mediterranean spices, citrus, and floral notes of broom. Sapidity is an integral part of the wine’s pronounced vitality; this saline mineral quality persists on the long finish. This is a harmonious and structured white wine that captures the freshness of a sea breeze while showing concentration, depth and complexity from perfectly integrated lees and oak aging which bring notes of cream, hazelnut and light spice.
Method
Though Bolgheri DOC appellation is universally recognized for its bold red wines (“Super Tuscans”), the traditional production in this territory was actually white and rosé wines. In fact, when the initial DOC production regulations were implemented in 1983 only white and rosé wines were included.
Grattamacco Vermentino grows in Bolgheri’s oldest Vermentino vineyards, the oldest of which vaunts a 36-year-old life-span. Lying at 100 metres’ elevation on a natural terrace facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, just 8 kilometres distant, the vines send their roots into white clay-rich soil with abundant calcareous flysch marl. The sea breeze-tempered Mediterranean climate here favours an organic viticultural regime designed to preserve the authenticity of the Grattamacco hillslope terroir. One-third of the must fermented in small oak barrels and the rest in stainless steel. Grattamacco Vermentino matured 6 months sur lie with frequent bâtonnage.
This is the only white wine produced by Grattamacco.
