Family owned since its founding in 1961, Heitz Cellar’s legacy runs as deep as the roots throughout the Napa Valley; a winery legend that has helped shape the history of Napa Valley winemaking. In the late 1950’s, pioneering vintner Joe Heitz ushered in Napa’s modern era with his iconic, globally celebrated wines, including Napa Valley’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon, the renowned Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard. Fifty-eight years of the Heitz family’s dedication to viticulture, stewardship, and classic winemaking, maintained the winery’s notoriety as a benchmark amongst its peers in California and Europe.
In April, 2018, Heitz Cellar entered an exciting new chapter as this rich legacy was passed into the hands of the Lawrence family, whose deep roots in agriculture and commitment to the same core values of fine winemaking made it a perfect match. The wines are made with an unwavering commitment to quality from organically farmed, 100% Napa Valley fruit, and a commitment to the sustainability of Napa Valley.
Tasting Notes
The palate of the Napa Valley Cabernet has always been reference point for the freshness and elegance that pure Cabernet Sauvignon is capable of achieving in the new world. This cuvee continues to be the entry point for classically produced produced Cabernet Sauvignon in the Napa Valley. Refined palate with bright red fruit, plum, mocha and savory notes. Showing vibrantly now and will continue to develop for years to come.
Method
Since the founding of Heitz, Cabernet Sauvignon has been consistently made year after year, with the intention of showcasing the best of the Heitz vineyards throughout the Napa Valley. Harvested from estate vineyards spanning six sub-appellations throughout the Napa Valley, this Cabernet Sauvignon offers a full composition of the breadth of Napa Valley as a whole.
From the fertile soils of western Oakville, to the recognizable terroir known as the “Rutherford Dust”, to the mountain grown fruit atop rugged Howell Mountain, these vineyards are each unique, but when combined, provide a palette of site specific characteristics that are the essence of Napa Valley. Each vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is harvested from vineyards in Oakville, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, St. Helena, Oak Knoll, and Calistoga. Each vineyard lot is kept separate and unblended during fermentation and also while aging in French oak barrels. The winemaker continuously tastes the various lots throughout the first two years of its time in barrel. When decisions have been made to select the exceptional barrels of wine for the single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, the remaining barrels are blended together to become our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The Napa Valley Cabernet spends another year in bottle before its release.
Our Thoughts
The first thing I wrote down when I was creating tasting notes for this wine was “textbook, awesome Cab.” I suppose I could probably just stop there but seriously, this sort of wine is why people freak out over Napa Cabernet. Expect notes of cassis, pencil shavings, potting soil, baking spices, and more. Endlessly complex and developing extremely well for a 2016 wine, this is the perfect treat for the Cabernet lover in your life. It’s the perfect partner for cozying up by the fire or with your favourite barbecue fare.
