Historically the land of Montalcino was poorly populated and hardly cultivated; it was a land of sheep farmers.  It was here in 1975 that lawyer, Gabriele Mastrojanni bought the San Pio and Loreto estates and decided to plant his first vineyards, of which part are still producing Mastrojanni wines today.  In the early years, only a few entered the wine-making adventure in Montalcino.  Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and the pioneers who believed in its winemaking potential for decades, Mastrojanni finds itself amongst the most respected Montalcino producers.  It is here that the singular Sangiovese Grosso grape is at its best.  Today Andrea Machetti is the head of the estate and works alongside winemaker Maurizio Castelli.  They oversee all production processes and take a minimal interventionist approach in their winemaking; striving to showcase the Montalcino terroir as it is best expressed through the Sangiovese Grosso grape.

Tasting Notes

The wine shows a ruby and bright red color, the nose has an intense bouquet of cherry and pulpy, ripe plum embellished with spicy touches, earthy and mineral nuances and intriguing notes of undergrowth. On the palate the noble tannic texture of Sangiovese stretches tight and impressive but also velvety, balanced by acidity and juicy freshness that confers elegance and long persistence.  Enjoy with grilled meats, game, lamb, hearty pasta dishes, mature cheese.

Method

Made from the Sangiovese Grosso grown in the Castelnuovo dell’Albate area of the appellation, which is a south-eastern sub-zone of Montalcino with medium elevations and said to produce distinctive wines with ripe fruit, depth and finesse.   All Brunello must adhere to strict production standards which guarantees the wine’s authenticity and quality.  This wine was oak aged for 3 years in Alliers barrels of various sizes (15, 33, 54 hl), then refined further in bottle for 6-8 months.  The 2016 vintage is highly regarded for Brunello wines as whole and the Mastrojanni Brunello has been recognized by many wine critics as exceptional.
