Since 1956, the Piedmonte winemaker Michele Chiarlo has made superior Barberas and high quality Barolos that today are consistently among the most renowned expressions of these wines. Over the years, Michele Chiarlo has realized a success and recognition brought by constant pursuit of quality. The winery is 100% family owned and operated, showcasing only local, single varietal expressions of terroir- no international grapes and no blends. The family specializes in 4 grapes that are considered to be the greatest native varietals of Piedmont: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Cortese and Moscato.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant garnet red colour with wonderful varietal character on the nose; notes of violet, red fruits and light spices. The palate has great structure with fine tannins and a round texture and long finish. The wonderful aromatics of Nebbiolo make it a great pairing for dishes that contain the equally enticing scents of truffle or mushrooms. It is delicious with braised meats, quail or duck and of course most pasta dishes with a meat sauce or a creamy cheese sauce.
Method
Made from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Asti region of Piemonte. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel and undergo 10 days of maceration on the skins followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then ages for 12 months in a combination of stainless steel, wood and bottle before being released. This wine is made from the same grape used for Barolo and Barbaresco, but does not require the long ageing period in wood and bottle before release, making it a more affordable option and good introduction to this grape varietal.
Our Thoughts
This wine aromatic, dominated by ripe red cherry, violet and rose, the palate is medium weight with fresh snappy acidity and medium tannins. There is a whisper of spice from brief oak ageing, but it is subtle as the pleasure of this wine lies in the purity of primary fruit and the overall balance on the palate.
