Saint Jean du Barroux wines express the terroir of the lower slopes of the famous Mont Ventoux near the road between Le Barroux and the Roman town of Vaison la Romaine. The talented Philippe Gimel keeps his yields very low in order to concentrate fruit flavour and de-stems every hand picked bunch. A lot of attention and care goes into crafting these wines and this results in wines that are pure with fine tannins and lots of flavour.
Tasting Notes
This is another unique expression of terroir from the southeastern region of the Southern Rhône along the lower slopes of the Mont Ventoux. This wine highlights the influence of growing on clay dominant soil. It is a blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and then 5% each of Carignan and Cinsault aged two years in concrete tanks. The nose is a sappy bouquet of white pepper, rose petals, kirsch, raspberries and pine. The palate is medium to full-bodied, elegant,
and seamless with integrated tannins and length on the finish.
Method
A blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault. The yields very low at around 20 hectoliters per hectare. Three quarters of the blend is macerated for ten days. The remaining is pressed directly. The juice ferments in a combincation of concrete tanks, neutral containers with an enamel coating and a few used barrels.
Our Thoughts
The wine is a certified organic blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 5% Carignan and 5% Cinsault; aged two years in concrete tanks, which I find lends some “grit” to an otherwise delicate palate. It displays aromas of white pepper, rose, sour black cherry, raspberries and pine that gives way to a full-bodied mouth feel and a lengthy finish. This vintage is ready to drink right now, but for those who can wait, 2-3 years from now it will be at its very best.
