More than 1000 years ago, the San Leonardo Estate was a monastery, but for over three centuries now San Leonardo has served as the residence of the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family, its proud custodians. Today, the San Leonardo estate is a garden of vineyards and roses, protected by the massive barrier of the Alps, which blunt the force of the cold northern winds while the valley floor benefits from, and in turn releases, warmth from nearby Lake Garda. The tenuta remains an antique world, in which winemaking practices, still uncompromisingly artisanal, yield wines that are true gems of Italy’s wine tradition, marked by freshness, harmony, and an innate elegance. San Leonardo is among the elite of the Trentino vineyards and specializes in Bordeaux varietals.
Vette is named for the imposing peaks that rise above its Sauvignon Blanc vineyard.
Tasting Notes
Vette is named for the imposing peaks that rise above its Sauvignon Blanc vineyard, and it is the true height of refreshing crispness and earthy minerality. This Northern Italian Sauvignon Blanc displays typical for the variety, including freshly cut grass, gooseberries, passion fruit, elderberries, and black currants. It is zesty, fresh with lots of intensity and concentration and is a must try for those who love Sauvignon Blanc but are looking to explore regions outside of France and New Zealand.
Method
Sauvignon Blanc was introduced to Alto Adige from France at the end of the nineteenth century. Since then, it has become one of the region’s leading varieties. Alto Adige is an alpine climate with ample sunshine, the grapes grow at high altitude and the yields are low; all of this means that the grapes ripen to well and develop good fruit character making for a wonderful balance and tension in the final wines.
The Vette Sauvignon Blanc is made by macerating the grapes on the skins for 12 hours at low-temperatures, followed by gentle pressing and fermentation for 20 days at a controlled temperature of 18°C. Once fermentation is complete, the wine rests for five months on the lees before bottling which benefits the wine’s structure and mouthfeel. The wine is then aged solely in stainless steel. Can cellar for 5 years.
