The Sella & Mosca winery and estate was founded in 1899 by a family of northern Italian adventurers, Vittorio Sella, an piemontese mountaineer, photographer and engineer, and Mr. Mosca, his brother in law and a lawyer, who saw the potential to grow vines and make wine in Alghero, northwest Sardinia.  Today it is one of one of the largest and most diverse estates in Europe totaling about 650 hectares, of which 542 hectares are vineyards making it home to Europe’s largest contiguous vineyard.

Sella & Mosca has vineyards in Gallura (in the northeast) producing top quality Vermentino di Gallura and a property in Sulcis (southwest) producing acclaimed Carignano di Sulcis.  Sella & Mosca is known for its excellent price-to-quality ratio and its wines appeal to casual wine drinkers to sommeliers and anyone in between.  Sella & Mosca’s wines have put the island of Sardinia on the viticultural map.

Tasting Notes

Pale yellow in the glass with an intense bouquet that combines tropical notes with more classic Mediterranean scrub and medicinal herbs and berries.  The palate reveals ripe stone fruit with a vein of savory and salty notes throughout and a mineral fresh finish.

Method

Made from Vermentino grapes harvested from 14 year old vines cultivated on ancient sedimentary soils.  They are hand harvested, pressed, cold macerated for an extended period and aged on the fine lees in stainless steel without undergoing malolactic fermentation.  The lees aging adds some mid palate weight and roundness, though the wine remains fresh and zippy having  not undergone malolactic fermentation.
