“Marcel Lapierre’s mentor, Jules Chauvet, is the man who in the 1950’s spoke out against chemical fertilization in the name of protecting “natural wine” and the traditional viticultural and winemaking methods of Beaujolais.

Throughout his career, Marcel Lapierre and a small group of other vignerons and winemakers in the region, made it their mandate to maintain the viticultural and winemaking traditions of Beaujolais. These traditional practices valued old vines, no synthetic herbacides, pesticides, late harvesting, sorting grapes and using only the healthiest, minimal or no sulphur and zero chaptilization. Marcel once said, “Our ideal is to make wine from 100% grape juice.”

Marcel passed away in 2010 and now his work is carried on by his talented son Mathieu. Nobody’s wines taste like Marcel Lapierre’s. Domaine Denogent Mâcon-Village

Jean-Jacques Robert took over five hectares of his grandfather’s vines in the Mâconnais just outside the village of Fuissé after finishing law school in 1988. Though most of the harvest had always been sold off to the cooperatives, the small parcels that made up the domaine were already understood to enjoy unique microclimates, producing Pouilly-Fuissés of great pedigree. Jean-Jacques soon came under the influence of two ardent defenders of terroir, the great master of Morgon, Marcel Lapierre, and American importer, Kermit Lynch. Little by little, Jean-Jacques has introduced radical changes to the domaine (while staying faithful to his grandfather’s wisdom about the complexity of the land), finally realizing its full potential. He is now joined by his son, Nicolas.

Domaine Rimbert Carignator

Jean-Marie Rimbert, a native of Provence, arrived in the Languedoc nearly twenty-five years ago and managed the vineyards at Château de Flaugergues for five years until he saved up enough money to purchase his first parcels of gnarled ancient vine Carignan that had been nurtured in schist-laden soils for the better part of the last century. Today, Jean-Marie has 20 hectares spread amongst 40 diverse parcels each with different soil compositions and expositions. Berlou has the highest elevation in all of the St. Chinian AOC and is the only place in the region that possesses schist rich soils. From the beginning, his objective was to cultivate vineyards with the utmost respect for the environment and his wines reflect all of the natural beauty, depth and flavor originating from those vines. The wines Jean-Marie crafts are a passionate testament to this region’s multi-dimensionality and ever-expanding potential.

The staff at Bishop’s Cellar are excited to have a few wines from Fattoria Fibbiano in the shop thanks to a happy accident at a Prowein, where Jason Macleod thought he was going to a meeting to taste Burgundies and ended up tasting some delicious organic Tuscan wines instead. He then suggested that our colleague Jason Macphee seek them out later at VinItaly to confirm that the wines he tasted were as delicious as he thought. Indeed they were and so we ordered them for you. Fattoria Fibbiano is a family-run farm.

The whole family has lived and worked there since 1997. Giuseppe, the father, deals with the general management of the estate and takes care of the vineyards and countryside. Matteo, the eldest of the two sons, is in charge of marketing the wines and his brother, Nicola, is the winemaker who oversees the entire wine-making process. Three generations of the Cantoni family live in one part of the 1,200 m2 farmhouse which also houses the agritourism. The land surrounding the farm is only treated using organic fertilisers and human intervention is kept to a minimum. From the point of view of energy consumption, the agritourism is completely self-sufficient with a 30-KW photovoltaic plant, a solar plant for the production of fresh water, and central heating which uses the wood obtained from pruning the river banks and from clearing the woodland. Fattoria Fibbiano is a certified organic farm.

Celler Burgos Porta is a D.O.Q. Priorat winery that has been growing grapes since the 19th century. As Burgos Porta Cellar they produced their first organic wine in 2003.   The vineyards of the cellar are situated in a small valley in Poboleda. 1950 and surround the cellar located in Mas Sinén which is an ancient family country house from 17th century.

Montepeloso Eneo

Montepeloso lies in the Maremma region of Tuscany, set back from the Tyrrhenian coast and close to the medieval town of Suvereto. Val di Cornia, which was awarded DOC status in 1989 followed by the DOCG appellation in 2011, is at a historical meeting point of Roman and Etruscan settlement and culture. The winery, nestling in the picturesque hills of the Mediterranean macchia, comprises 30 hectares.  The soil of Montepeloso is rich in minerals, characterized by the Silex typical of the area and the scaly Scaglia Toscana (fossilized clay). The Montepeloso vineyard is partly terraced, spread across gently undulating slopes between 50 and 200 metres above sea level.

The Supernatural Sauvignon Blanc

Supernatural Wine Co. is a producer of certified organic, naturally vinified, low sulphur white and skin-fermented white wines from a north-facing hillside estate in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Hayden Penny is the winemaker and viticulturist. The aim is to produce terroir driven wines with as little intervention as possible in the process. The use of indigenous yeast gathered from vineyards for fermentation and nothing but a little sulphur is added before bottling. The focus is on producing dry aromatic and skin-fermented white wines in a very clean and direct style.
