Located on elevated land near Gorges de Pennafort, 25 km northwest of the ancient Roman city of Frejus on the Mediterranean coast, the first traces of the Château’s site date back to times when Gauls (Celtic people of mainland Europe in the Iron Age and the Roman period) used the elevated land as a lookout point, to spot intruders coming by boat into the Gulf of Frejus.
Spearheaded by Sacha Lichine, son of famous Alexis Lichine (wine lover, importer, Bordeaux château owner, educator, and salesman), he’s been involved in just about every aspect of the wine business, from work in the vineyards to the sale of the final product. He started his wine journey by working at his family properties Château PrieurĂ© Lichinne and Château Lascombes during the summers of his youth and soon found himself leading American tourists on guided trips through Europe, visiting the finest restaurants and wineries in the process. From there, he dabbled in many different importing endeavours involving wines from all over France but most notably, Bordeaux and Burgundy.
Nothing compares to his acquisition of Château d’Esclans in Provence back in 2006; Sacha’s ambitious efforts to develop more seriously produced RosĂ© has paid of with a successful range of wines that include: Whispering Angel, Garrus, and The Palm. In 2019, Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessy (LVMH) purchased a 55% stake in the company with Sacha retaining 45%, establishing a new partnership.
Tasting Notes
Pouring a pale pink, fresh red berry fruit and floral notes jump out of the glass. On the palate, those aromatics are reinforced with added ripeness to the fruit notes and a long, round finish. Use as an aperitif, pair with a variety of cheese boards, or pair alongside your favourite seafood dishes.
Method
Made from Grenache, Cinsault, and Rolle (Vermentino), the grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Esclans Valley and Cotes de Provence region. Harvested at night to ensure freshness, grapes are sorted at the winery for the purpose of health and quality. After that, soft crushing occurs followed by rapid temperature cooling (7-8 degrees C). Free run juice is then produced which gets vinified in stainless steel.Â
