Ca’Marcanda is Angelo Gaja’s (of Barbaresco, Piemonte) estate in Bolgheri, southern Tuscany. Gaja saw the potential in Bolgheri for producing top quality wines back in 1994 and he established a winery there in 1996. Today the estate extends over an area of approximately 80 hectares of vineyards in Bolgheri’s DOC appellation. Although Angelo, who is now in his mid 80s, is still involved in the family’s wine businesses, Angelo’s children are at the helm of his estates.
Tasting Notes
Vibrant and nuanced on the nose and palate. Aromas of dark cherry, mocha, dried herbs, anise, mint and balsamic notes. The palate is medium to full bodied, fresh with smooth ripe tannins and a long finish.
Method
Magari is one of Angelo Gaja’s iconic wines from his estate in Bolgheri Tuscany. It is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and is characterized by brightness and concentration typical of this coastal terroir and the breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea.
2022 vintage report for Ca’marcanda from the supplier – Temperatures were high throughout the season with the exception of March and April when strong diurnal changes (18/24°C during the day and 5/10°C at night) disturbed bud growth and caused uneven vine development. May registered higher than usual temperatures; this heat continued during June, and the weather conditions became torrid and very dry during July. In the final phase of the season, rainy August and September allowed the vines to get some relief, and the grapes to reach full ripeness and balance, while still maintaining excellent acidity. The vines have shown that they were able to react in a very positive way, resisting the initial lack of water and metabolizing the rain as best and as quickly as possible. In total, we had 600 mm of water throughout the year, but the distribution was very uneven and concentrated at the beginning (October and December 2021) and the end of the season (August and September). Harvest started in mid-August for the whites and finished on October 3rd with the last Cabernet Sauvignon. The quality of the vintage is very good, and the wines are surprisingly fresh; as a consequence of drought and heat, the vines slowed down the vegetative cycle and managed to retain high levels of acidity in the grapes.
