Winemaking has been a Coppola family tradition for several generations. Agostino Coppola, Francis Coppola’s grandfather, used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment building using concrete vats he constructed himself.
When filmaker Francis Ford Coppola began to develop the idea for their Sonoma winery, they took inspiration from the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, which was essentially the inspiration for all modern amusements parks. Coppola wanted rides, as well as cafes and refreshments; an amusement park for all. The vision was for Francis Ford Coppola Winery to become such a park for the entire family to enjoy; where there are things for kids to do, so they can be close to their parents who are sampling wines and foods.
The winery officially opened in 2010 and in 2021 the Coppola family sold it to another American wine family, the Delicato family, who today continue in the legacy of crafting excellent quality wines and creating memorable experiences at the winery.
Tasting Notes
Bramble berry, toasted oak and spice aromas carry onto a silky textured palate. Dense flavors of strawberry, mocha, raspberry jam, toasted almonds, vanilla and spice continue through to a long pleasing finish. A Pinot Noir with lots of finesse and layers of fruit and integrated oak that is as easy to drink on its own as it is to enjoy with food. Try this with cedar planked salmon, roast chicken or turkey, or a hearty grain bowl full of roasted vegetables and a fresh herb dressing.
Method
Diamond Collection wines are made from grapes grown across California and are carefully blended to create consistently balanced wines.
The Diamond Collection Santa Barbara Pinot Noir is grown in an appellation that represents the only place in North America where the coastal mountain range transitions from full north-south orientation to full east-west. The morning fog prolongs the growing season and helps the fruit maintain ideal levels of natural acidity and ripe well concentrated fruit. This Pinot Noir has a small percentage of Syrah in the blend (5.7%) and is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels.
