The Massolino family has been producing wine since 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba. The estate goes by the name Azienda Agricola Massolino Vigna Rionda. When great-grandfather Giovanni, founded the estate it was very much a traditional farm of the Langhe region; producing fruit and vegetables, raising livestock and making wine for personal consumption and bulk sales. Today the estate’s main focus is high quality wine production. Massolino wines are the result of meticulous attention in the vineyards, an essential approach in the cellar and respect for the land.
The soil composition, exposure, the age of the vines and climate are factors that influence the personality of every wine produced and it is particularly true when it comes to the highly sensitive Nebbiolo grape. The Massolino vineyards grow in ideal locations. The wines beautifully express the regional terroir. In order to highlight the uniqueness of each vineyard and site, the grapes from different vineyards are vinified separately.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet red. The aromas are ethereal and enveloping with intense and persistent notes of sweet spices, sandalwood, tobacco and leather. The palate has great structure with remarkable tannins which will soften with time. Its very long finish is typical of Barolos from Castiglione Falletto. This is an ideal wine for long term ageing. It is best to decant and serve it at temperatures between 18-20°C.
Enjoy this wine with the rich, traditional cuisine of the region such as stewed meats and medium-to aged cheeses.
Method
Made from Nebbiolo grapes grown in our vineyard in the “Parussi” vineyard in Castiglione Falletto at an altitude of 290 m above sea level. The soil is of mixed consistency and the vines are on average 40 years old. The wine was first produced in 2007. Traditional Barolo with long fermentation and maceration in oak fermenters (“tini”) at temperatures around 30°C; the wine is aged in large Slavonian oak casks for up to 30 months before being left to mature in bottle for about a year in special dark, cool cellars.
The excellent south-easterly/south-westerly exposure of the vineyard situated on the crest of the hill, in the Parussi sub-zone, guarantees the production of excellent quality grapes. The very calcareous soil conveys a remarkable structure with quite strong tannins. Parussi is the first Barolo made from grapes grown outside Serralunga d’Alba, in another fantastic area: Castiglione Falletto. The traditional vinification and ageing processes, which are the same as those used for its “Barolo brothers” from Serralunga d’Alba, highlight the well-known capacity of Nebbiolo grapes to deliver Barolos with different fascinating
characteristics reflecting the changes in the microclimate and soil the grapes were grown in.
