The Massolino family has been producing wine since 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba. The estate goes by the name Azienda Agricola Massolino Vigna Rionda. When great-grandfather Giovanni, founded the estate it was very much a traditional farm of the Langhe region; producing fruit and vegetables, raising livestock and making wine for personal consumption and bulk sales. Today the estate’s main focus is high quality wine production. Massolino wines are the result of meticulous attention in the vineyards, an essential approach in the cellar and respect for the land.
The soil composition, exposure, the age of the vines and climate are factors that influence the personality of every wine produced and it is particularly true when it comes to the highly sensitive Nebbiolo grape. The Massolino vineyards grow in ideal locations. The wines beautifully express the regional terroir. In order to highlight the uniqueness of each vineyard and site, the grapes from different vineyards are vinified separately.
Tasting Notes
Bright garnet red in the glass. Aromas reveal multiple broad and enveloping sensations, ranging from those of the early years, focused primarily on red fruits and flowers, to the more evolved sensations of brushwood, tobacco and spices that develop with age. This wine is a harmony of captivating nuances that are released and evolve slowly in the glass. Vigna Rionda is a unique Barolo, impossible to describe in just a few lines and hard to compare with others, even those from the Serralunga area. A wine capable of complexity, longevity and structure, which come together with unparalleled elegance. A little patience is required for it to reach its full potential, which is why it stays in our cellars until its sixth year, the only wine in our range to do so, when it is released as a Riserva.
It is best to decant it and serve at a temperature of 18-20°C. It pairs beautifully with meat dishes, rich in intense and persistent aromas and flavours, and with mature cheeses.
Method
Vigna Rionda is a 3 hectare vineyard with South-south-west exposure with marly limestone soil. It is located in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba at an altitude of about 330 m above sea level. It it is one of the most sought-after and respected crus in the area. Something happens on this hill! Massolino has been making a Barolo Riserva wine from this vineyard since 1982. The wine is made in the traditional Barolo fashion; with long fermentation and maceration in oak vats at a temperature of around 30°C; aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for up to 42 months, followed by a further 24 months in the bottle. The soil and microclimate of this hillside allow the production of exceptionally structured and complex wines. Traditional vinification enhances the qualities of this Cru, respecting the natural predisposition for long ageing, while emphasising the elegance and depth that only this vineyard can deliver.
