Poggerino is a Tuscan estate located in Radda in Chianti that has approximately 11 hectares planted mainly with Sangiovese. The farming practices are organic and like so many Tuscan wine estates, they also cultivate other fruits and vegetables that they use at the restaurant of their agriturismo. The stages of production, from viticulture, to vinification and marketing are managed by the owners themselves.
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 400/500 m. above sea level with a south / south west exposure. The soil is very rich in stony skeleton coming from the decay of the galestro rock; it is precisely this abundance of stone that gives the soil optimal drainage. They practice organic farming, meaning they do not use pesticides and herbicides which would damage the vitality of the soil and interrupt its natural processes. The only protective treatments against parasites they use are sulfur and a minimal amount of copper.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant ruby red colour. On the nose notes of blackberries, leather, cherries and red currants with a touch of licorice, graphite and tobacco. Sweet and persistent tannins.
Method
After careful selection in the vineyard, the Sangiovese grapes are destemmed and pressed. The alcoholic fermentation begins without the addition of selected yeasts and proceeds at 28°/30°C. The entire vinification and maceration process takes place in concrete tanks for about 55 days with manual pumping over and punching down. In December, the new wine is decanted into 20/25hl Slavonian oak barrels where malolactic fermentation takes place. After an 18-month refinement, the wine is assembled in the bottle. The wine is aged for a minimum of 12 months before being sold.
