Weingut Heinrich Naked Red

Gernot and Heike Heinrich are a husband and wife team that took over Gernot’s family winery in 1985.  Heinrich was one of the first producers in the region to branch out from making simple white wines to producing high-quality reds.  He saw the potential in local varietals like Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and St Laurent.  They have been practicing organic and biodynamic viticulture since 2006 and wholly believe that it is the best choice for both the planet and the wines.  He feels that biodynamics lends to better wine with a more precise expression of vineyard and soil.  They were one of the founding members of Respekt, a certifying body for biodynamic viticulture in Austria.  Gernot believes that the best wines express a sense of place, and that they can only do this if they’re rooted in a biologically diverse environment and the vines live in symbiosis with a healthy ecosystem.  As expected from a biodynamic producer, Heinrich aims for as little intervention in the winery as possible.

Bachelder Nuits St. Georges La Petite Charmotte

Bachelder is a small winery with cellars located in three of the world’s classic cool climate Chardonnay regions: Burgundy; Oregon and Niagara.  Thomas Bachelder strives to make pure, mineral wines from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, elegantly-respectful of their individual terroir and have been doing so since the since the mid-90’s.  Bachelder’s ‘3 Terroirs’ Project, is all about  honouring terroir.  The wines are made from using ‘wild’ (indigenous) yeasts, using organic vineyards wherever possible… Everything goes to barrel for long ageing ‘élévage,’ but the intent is not wines that taste of oak, but pure, unfettered wines that sing lightly and clearly of their vineyard origins with as little ‘makeup’ as possible – wines that are finely perfumed and tightly-wound, offering the classic refined fruit and textured minerality of the best terroirs.

Philippe Guerin Abstraction #3 Chardonnay

Philippe Guérin makes wine in a quiet hamlet in the Loire Valley.  He is the 5th generation of his family to farm 30 hectares of vines within the communes of Vallet and Goulaine.  Most of his vines are Melon de Bourgogne grapes, dedicated to the production of Muscadet, with the oldest vines approaching 90 years of age.  The balance is made up of more commercial varieties which are sold as either Vin de pays or Vin de France.  The harvest is done with a combination of hand and machine.  The “Abstraction” label is Philippe’s Vin de France  label where he has more freedom to experiment and innovate with his winemaking. It is not uncommon in this area to lose a significant amount of grapes (especially the Chardonnay) to frost on a given year, so when the weather cooperates and Philip can produce a Chardonnay it is always a treat!

Wente Southern Hills Cabernet Sauvignon

C.H. Wente came to America in the late 1800s from Hamburg Germany, learned to make wine from a German by the name of Charles Krug in the Napa Valley, and in 1883 established his first 47 acre Estate and Winery. He chose the Livermore Valley as it was famed for its excellent soils and climate. In 1908, C.H. planted the first Chardonnay vines in the Livermore Valley. In 1912, second generation and a UC Davis student, Ernest Wente, persuaded his father and founder, C.H. Wente, to import Chardonnay cuttings from a well-known vine nursery, F. Richter Nursery in Montpellier, France, to the Livermore Valley.

Fast forward to the group of fifth generation winegrowers and Karl, Christine, Jordan, Aly, and Niki Wente are actively working in various roles in the winery from operations, viticulture, and marketing, passionately continuing the family tradition of sustainable farming and producing the best-quality wines.

Kim Crawford Pinot Noir

The vineyards of Kim Crawford are located in outstanding, predominantly coastal sites. The grapes benefit from long days, clean sea breezes and crisp nights. In combination with New Zealand’s long and dry autumn season, our grapes ripen slowly, which allows them to build flavor intensity as well as develop a sophisticated acidity. In the end, it is this unique combination of factors–from regions and soils, to temperatures and growth rates–that give Kim Crawford a perfect balance of fruit and acidity.

Champagne Dom Perignon

First released in 1937 (the 1921 vintage) and owned by Moet Chandon, Dom Pérignon is a prestige cuvée (also known as tête de cuvée) which is the top Champagne that a producer will make. Dom Pérignon is vintage champagne only.  Each vintage is a creation, singular and unique, that expresses both the character of the year, and the character of Dom Pérignon.  After at least eight years of elaboration in the cellars, the wine embodies the perfect balance of Dom Pérignon, the Plénitude of harmony.

Dom Pérignon was a Benedictine monk and cellar master in the 17th century. He is widely credited as being the “father” of Champagne and thought to have said: “Come quickly, I am tasting stars!” upon his first taste of sparkling wine. While the champagne method came before Pérignon began his efforts, he is known to have perfected the art of Champagne making overall.  He is credited with creating and mastering many techniques like blending grapes to improve wine quality, enhancing flavours in finished wine, and proper bottling pacing. He also started using cork closures and thicker glass bottles so they would not explode under pressure.

Tanqueray No. Ten

Tanqueray has led the way in the gin category for nearly 200 years with an unshakeable attention to quality. It all started in 1830 when Charles Tanqueray set up his Vine Street distillery in Bloomsbury in London and started to experiment with the world’s finest botanicals – creating over 300 recipes in the process. The result was Charles’ extraordinary Tanqueray London Dry recipe which has helped define the standard for all London Dry Gins ever since. Affectionately named after the still it is made in.

Talisker 10 Year Old Single Malt

Talisker hails from the austere and rugged Isle of Skye in North Western Scotland and boasts all of the expected coastal characteristics of an Island Malt. Talisker was one of Diageo’s original six Classic Malts along with Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchie, Lagavulin, and Oban. Despite it’s relatively remote location, Talisker is Diageo’s most visited distillery and is reputed to be the favourite drink of Robert Louis Stevenson. Talisker’s sea-inspired style makes it an absolute must try for single malt fans – a true maritimer and a true classic.
