The idea for African Pride Wines came in 2002, with a goal to create a range of wines that offer great value and character while staying true to South African wine style and terrior. With grapes sourced from contacted producers in Stellenbosch, Worcester, Wellington, and Paarl, the portfolio has grown since its inception and their wines are now available in over 30 countries with 100,000 cases produced per year.

Footprint, Forager, and Just Nuisance make up their core lineup and all are overseen by winemaker and shareholder Mike Graham. Some 44+ harvests under his belt (the majority in South Africa and some in France), Mike was one of the first “flying winemakers,” alluding to his stints at different wineries in both Europe and home in South Africa.

Tasting Notes

A bouquet of aromas including red berries and dark fruits with a hint of cedar and tobacco leaves occupy the nose; these flavours carry through to the palate with ripe, grippy tannins and fresh acidity leading to a long and persistent finish. Medium to full-bodied and dry, pair this with oxtail stew, a rack of lamb, or your favourite cut of steak- chargrilled, preferably.

Method

100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes were sourced from vineyards in the Breedekloof and Paarl regions. Cold soaked prior to inoculation with selected dry yeast and fermented at 28 –30°C in stainless steel tanks using the ‘rack & return’ system and regular pump-overs. After fermentation the wine was given extended skin contact for 5-10 days before racking an pressing. Around 15% was matured in stainless steel tanks with French oak staves.

Our Thoughts

South Africa is a hub for great, valued Cabernet Sauvignons that are often overlooked. Footprint Cabernet is a classic example of this grape, with abundant ripe red fruits and tell tale cedar and tobacco cab notes. Fresh, full-bodied, and bright, this wine is great for having on its own or paired with your heartier meat dishes or even BBQ.
