Feudo di Santa Tresa estate has around 123 acres of vineyards in the historical vine growing region of Vittoria.  Lying close to the Mediterranean, Feudo di Santa Tresa’s vineyards benefit from cooling sea breezes. The estate’s soil consists of a layer of light, red, sandy loam (terra rossa) resting on top of a limestone base, which helps retain vital water. In order to preserve this rich terroir, only natural techniques are used to assist cultivation. While the abundant wind and scarce rainfall naturally protect against pest, infestations are further prevented through limited copper and sulfur treatments.  In addition, only natural fertilizers are used to avoid introducing chemicals into the topsoil. Undersoil irrigation is utilized to prevent evaporation, thereby maximizing water efficiency.

Tasting Notes

The bouquet is fresh and lively, reminiscent of wild strawberries and delicate sweet spices.  The palate is smooth and long, with hints of spice.  The acidity races through the wine, lifting the fruit and releasing a whole variety of fruit flavours in the mouth.

Frappato is a rare red grape from Sicily that bursts with aromas of ripe red berries, spice and incense.  The wine is cold macerated on the skins for 10 days and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 7-10 days at 22°C before resting for about 6 months in bottle.

Often a revelation to wine drinkers, Frappato is elegant and refreshing – surprisingly more delicate than many of the muscular reds of Sicily, yet full of character. Santa Tresa Frappato could be termed a “modern classic” – a modern interpretation of an antique style of wine – with all the character of the Frappato grape variety, made in a really modern, approachable way. In Vittoria, Sicily, locals often drink it slightly chilled, with grilled fish.
