Jean-Marc Boillot Montagny 1er

Jean-Marc Boillot was born in Volnay, into a family of vignerons. Between 1971-1984, he worked alongside his grandfather in Volnay, Pommard, and Meursault until a family disagreement between Jean-Marc, his grandfather, his father, and his brother led him to leave the family business and pursue his own winemaking journey. In 1988, Jean-Marc made wine in Puligny-Montrachet with Olivier Leflaive, a new négociant at the time. From there, he started making wine under his own name, acquiring plots in Beaune and Pommard- it wasn’t until Jean-Marc’s grandfather tasted his wine that their relationship began turning for the better. When his grandfather retired, he left Jean-Marc plots in Volnay, Pommard, and Meursault- as well as an unused cellar called “La Pommardière.” Cut to 1993 and another 5 ha of land was inherited by Jean-Marc via his maternal grandfather; he acquired vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Bâtard-Montrachet.

“Boillot makes white and red wine with equal facility, and with equally impressive results. Few people are thus gifted, it is like being ambidextrous.” Raymond Blake, Côte d’Or.

Jean-Marc, now in his seventies, is often referred to as the ‘quiet pur-sang’ of Burgundy, and far from retiring. His son-in-law, François, is now in charge of the winemaking under the watchful eye of his father-in-law.

Brancaia Il Blu

Purchased in 1981 by Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer, the original estate sitting atop the Brancaia hill, it was initially a place for their family to visit on holiday. The 20 ha site sported a house in desperate need of renovations and 4 ha of vineyards; a well-protected plot surrounding by deep woods, free from any neighbouring vineyards that have been sprayed with chemicals.

After their Chianti Classico (1983) won a blind tasting in 1986, it wasn’t soon after that the Widmer’s bought 53 ha more, located in Radda. During that time, their famous Il Blu was produced- a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. This blend didn’t meet the requirements and/or guidelines to be classified as Chianti Classico and the Widmer family found themselves part of the Super Tuscan movement, a label eventually granted by the Italian government in 1992 known as: Toscana IGT.

Montes Alpha Chardonnay

In 1987, Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, both highly experienced wine professionals, wanted to realize their dream of producing Chilean wines a quantum-leap higher in quality than the standards of the time and were the first winery to officially make a premium wine with their 1987 Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon.  In 1988, they joined up with the other two founders, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, who brought their own complementary skills and expertise to the venture.  Montes is a pioneer in the Chilean wine industry and today produces a range of wines in various category levels, from entry level easy drinking wines to premium and ultra premium wines.
