Caparzo Sangiovese

Caparzo was established towards the end of the 1960’s. The vineyards of the Caparzo Estate include about. 90 hectares (210 acres) in Montalcino. The estate is located on a hillside area 220 metres above sea level, facing south and south-east. The company has grown and adapted with the times all while maintaining and respecting the traditions of the terroir. The rustic and elegant Caparzo villa, La Casa, located at the bottom of Montalcino is available for rent for those who want to fully experience the beauty and tranquillity of the Tuscan countryside. The origins of the place named Caparzo are still unknown and according to some, the name is derived, as shown by ancient maps, from Ca’ Pazzo. However, some say the term should derive from the Latin Caput Arsum, indicating “a place touched by sun.”

Feudo di Santa Tresa Frappato

Brother and sister Stefano and Marina Girelli, wine entrepreneurs from Trentino, discovered the winemaking region of Sicily and purchased Santa Tresa in 2001.

Santa Tresa (Sicilian dialect for Santa Teresa) is nestled in Vittoria, in the south east of Sicily; their estate encompasses 50 ha of land, 39 ha dedicated to vineyards. When the winery and properties were acquired in 2001, indigenous clones of Frappato, Nero d’Avola, and Grillo were discovered, planted across the existing vineyards. Aside from the abundance of indigenous varieties they already cultivate, an organic, experimental vineyard is used to rediscover other indigenous grapes, with their traditional vines. Within this experimental plot, Albanello and Orisi are grown- ancient varietals that date back to nearly the beginning of winemaking in the region. More recently, the winery has decide to source all their water from a local reservoir, using only natural rainwater for any irrigation. On top of that, green beans are grown and used to make natural fertilizer.

Rocca di Castagnoli Fattoria di Scannano Chianti

With estates in Maremma (Magliano), Sicily (Ispica), and Chianti Classico- Rocca di Castagnoli is part of the larger Tenute Cali family of wineries. Purchased in 1981, and first belonging to the Tempi family, the estate is one of the most ancient in the Chianti Classico region, dating back to the 18th century. The winery itself has also been considered somewhat of an economic driving force for the village it surrounds, with a visit from Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo in 1773, who praised the estates excellent land management, maintenance, and innovation. Spanning some 850 ha with elevation ranging as high as 860m to 380m above sea level, 92 ha are dedicated to vines with Sangiovese being the primary grape cultivated.  They farm organically.

Joseph Phelps Insignia

Before Joe Phelps became a vintner in the early 1970s, he’d built a successful career as a construction engineer. Before graduating from Colorado State University, Joe had many different jobs; a newspaper carrier, print shop owner, filling station attendant, fishing lure purveyor, surveyor, and estimator. However it was in construction that Joe first made his mark, building the company his father had founded, Hensel Phelps Construction Company, into one of the largest and most successful construction companies in the U.S. in little more than a decade.

In March of 1973, Joe took possession of the 600 acre cattle ranch on the east side of St. Helena, wasting no time laying out and planting 100 acres of vineyards with the help of Walter Schug- hes first hired winemaker. They planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer. Today the Phelps family owns and farms 425 acres of vines in Napa Valley on nine estate vineyards in St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll District, South Napa, and Carneros. Each vineyard has its own personality and brings a different characteristic to the wines. Their philosophy is to maintain, preserve and (where possible and appropriate) ecologically enhance the natural vineyard environment.

Luxardo Maraschino

Luxardo is a family-owned company founded in Zara, a port city on the Dalmatian coast of what is now Croatia. Girolamo Luxardo, a Genovese businessman, and his wife, Maria Canevari, moved to Zara in 1817. It was Maria who began perfecting “rosolio maraschino,” a liqueur produced in Dalmatian convents since medieval times from special maraschino cherries. In 1913, Michelangelo Luxardo built the most modern and massive distillery in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but it was destroyed in World War II by Anglo-American bombings. Only one member of the fourth generation, Giorgio Luxardo, survived the World War II invasion and fled to Italy. Escaping with only a cherry sapling, Giorgio crossed the Adriatic Sea to the Veneto region of northeast Italy and reconnected with a colleague who had saved the Luxardo recipe book. Armed with the surviving tools and a desire to reestablish his family’s legacy, Giorgio chose the small Veneto city of Torreglia to rebuild the distillery in 1946. At this new home, Luxardo restored its extensive product line of Italian liqueurs and continued to export the products to markets around the world. Luxardo continues to produce Maraschino to Maria Canevari’s original recipe, as it was written down in 1821. Today, Luxardo is operated by Franco Luxardo of the family’s fifth generation, along with members of the sixth.
