English Porter
Modern styles of porter showcase a moderate-strength brown beer with a restrained roasty character and bitterness. May have a range of roasted flavors, generally without burnt qualities, and often has a chocolate-caramel-malty profile. Porter is said to have been popular with the transportation workers of Central London, hence the name. British brewing documentation from the 1700’s shows that traditional porters were a blend of three different styles: an old ale (stale or soured), a new ale (brown or pale ale) and a weak ale (mild ale), with various combinations of blending and freshness.
