A Fleur de Pampre Visan Rouge

Domaine la Florane is a father and son team of biodynamic wine producers crafting wines in the southern Rhône Valley in the appellations of Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Visan and Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Saint-Maurice.  In addition to cultivating wine grapes and producing wine, they grow olive trees and lavender.

Domaine Florane owns 24 hectares of vineyards in Visan.  Altitude ranges from 280 to 380 metres.  The sites are in a south-facing valley – called a “coste chaude” (sunny hillside).  The Mediterranean Sea once covered the Rhône Valley, and met with rivers that flowed down the young mountains of La Lance and Ventoux, conveying large amounts of sand and clay which were captured by the coastal currents.

Domaine Faury is one of the region’s most artisanal producers. Occhipinti Frappato

Arianna Occhipinti is a vigneron in Vittoria, Sicily who inherited her passion for the vine and wine at the young age of 16 when she attended VinItaly with her vigneron uncle of another iconic winery, COS.  Though Arianna studied oenology at the University of Milan, she has taken a very hands off approach to grape growing and winemaking by following organic principles.  She hand harvests only healthy grapes, relies on spontaneous fermentation and uses minimal sulfur.

Raymond Usseglio Tradition Red

Domaine Usseglio is, first and foremost, the story of a family. In 1948 Francis Usseglio, an Italian labourer, came to Châteauneuf-du-Pape to work in the vineyards. His passion for wine and motivation led him to take on a few hectares of vines on a sharecropping basis known as métayage. His son Raymond took over from him, continuing the tradition but adding a modern touch by converting the vineyards to biodynamic. Today, the 24-hectare Domaine Usseglio is run by Francis’ grandchildren, Jean-Pierre, Thierry and Stéphane and is one of the appellation’s leading lights. Its grape varieties are typical for Châteauneuf du Pape.  The vines are between 30 and 60 years old and harvesting is carried out manually. The resulting wines have plenty of character, combining power with a hint of rustic simplicity.  Usseglio is considered one of the top producers in the appellation.

It is at the entrance of the Marano valley, one of the four valleys that make up Valpolicella’s classical area, the original and oldest wine production area of the region. Big Flower Cabernet Sauvignon

Ginny Povall was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts and began making wine at home as a hobby.  She eventually made her way to South Africa to pursue her passion to make wine on a larger scale and she planted vines on Protea Heights Farm, located in Devon Valley, about 10 minutes outside the center of Stellenbosch.  Back in  the 1940s, this was the first farm in South Africa to grow protea flowers, which is the country’s national flower and Ginny decided to dedicate a fraction of her property to protea cultivation.  The vineyards were freshly planted in 2009 and 2010 and her winery just now coming into steady production and from her inaugural vintage, she has garnered well deserved attention.  She practices sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention throughout the winemaking process.  The Botanica range of wines have as much personality as their vibrant and charming winemaker.

Chum Churum Apple Soju

Soju is a very popular spirit sold in Korea that is traditionally made by distilling rice and other cereal grains. However, since the 1960s to alleviate rice shortages, most soju has been produced by diluting high strength neutral alcohol from distilled sweet potatoes or tapioca.

One of the most trendy brands in South Korea, Chum Churum (which translates as “like the first tme”) is popular because of the added alkaline water, higher sweetness, and relatively lower alcohol content. This smoother and softer profile has been extremely successful and is especially popular among younger drinkers in South Korea.

Clos Puy Arnaud

Clos Puy Arnaud is an organic and biodynamic wine estate making wine under the Grand Vin de Bordeaux Appellation.   The estate has a history dating back to back to at least 1871 in the Cotes de Castillon region. However, the modern era for the estate begins in the year 2000 when Thierry Valette purchased the estate. Thierry Valette is related to the Valette family that also own Chateau Troplong Mondot and previously, Chateau Pavie.  The 11 hectare Right Bank vineyard of Clos Puy Arnaud is planted to 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is the goal of Clos Puy Arnaud to increase the amount of Cabernet Franc in the vineyards over time to 40%. They are also planning on adding a small parcel of Petit Verdot and perhaps Malbec as well. On average, the vines are close to 30 years of age. But they also have old vines that are more than 60 years of age. The vineyard has a terroir of limestone and clay soils.  However, they are located on the top of the Castillon plateau and the limestone in soil is unique. It is known as asteries, which is the hardest type of limestone found in nature.

Durban Vaucluse Blanc

Sourced from the terroirs around Domaine de Durban, the grapes for this white Rhône are sourced from parcels next to the village of Beaumes-de-Venise. These vineyards were traditionally used for the family’s personal consumption, and many of the unused grapes were sold off in bulk. As none of this was for commercial bottling, the Leydier family made no effort to have these parcels included in the A.O.C. Côtes du Rhône when the boundaries were first established in 1937. Upon hearing that the family had been selling these grapes to the local cave cooperative in Vacqueyras, Kermit presented the Leydiers the idea of creating a value-driven second label. The plan soon evolved into a collaboration between the family and Kermit. Together, they bottle both a Vin de Pays de Vaucluse Rouge and Blanc.

Faury Saint Joseph Rouge

Domaine Faury is one of the region’s most artisanal producers. When Philippe Faury took over the domaine in 1979, the family was selling wine, peaches and cherries, and the bulk of their clientele was local. Over the years, Philippe expanded their holdings to over eleven hectares, and expanded sales to an international client base. In addition, he has shared his savoir faire with his son, Lionel. Unlike many other vignerons in the region, the Faurys have a strong aversion to new oak. Faury crafts exceptional wines from one of the Northern Cote du Rhone’s most artisinal producers. The grapes are grown on predominantly granite soils and undergo partial de-stemming, soft crushing and temperature controlled fermentation to assure a fresh and lively wine style. The wines are unfined and lightly filtered just before bottling which ensures maximum flavour and elegance.

Fontanelle Stiglianese II

Azienda Agricola Fontanelle consists of four farm buildings on 55 hectares of land, west of Chianciano in Southern Tuscany.  Being a small family-run business has enabled its owners to produce a limited yet prestigious selection of wines, Chianti DOC, Toscana IGT and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.  In addition to wine production, the family’s love for their land and tradition, means that they also produce extra-virgin olive oil, breed Tuscan pigs, called cinta senese and practice arboriculture.

Riccardo Rosati, completely dedicated and full of experience that has been handed down from generations, looks after the vineyards of high density and low yield per hectare, ensuring that the wine is of high quality without losing its original flavor.  The wine production, which is exclusively from the owner’s vineyard, is intentionally limited.  The choice of looking after small areas of land containing the best characteristics of soil, the optimum position and the decision to plant native vineyards with a density of 5-6000 groves per hectare have awarded the owner with high quality wines that are among the more traditional Tuscan classics, but well-structured and complex.

Jinro Chamisul Classique Soju

Soju is a very popular spirit sold in Korea that is traditionally made by distilling rice and other cereal grains. However, since the 1960s to alleviate rice shortages, most soju has been produced by diluting high strength neutral alcohol from distilled sweet potatoes or tapioca.

Jinro is the top selling spirit company in the world after exploding in popularity with their “chamisul” brand of soju in the 1990s. Jinro soju is so popular that its name is synonymous with the product itself much like Kleenex brand is to tissue.

Petite Selve Red

Chateau de la Selve is located in the Ardèche region, between Northern and Southern Rhône. There are many producers in this area growing organic and practicing biodynamics in the vineyard and winery including Château de la Selve. The vineyards are situated on the banks of the Chassezac river, the most important tributary of the Ardèche. The soil consists of very chalky clay. In 1990, Chàteau de la Selve was bought by Jean-Régis and Magdeleine Chazollon. As their son Benoît took over the winemaking in 2002 at which time, the vineyard also turned biodynamic. Beautifully clean and pure wines are being produced at the domaine, that celebrate the unique terroir of the region.

Tantalus Pinot Noir

Tantalus vineyards and winery is situated on the eastern slopes of the Okanagan Valley, overlooking the shores of Lake Okanagan and the City of Kelowna. Originally known as Pioneer Vineyards, the site was first planted to table grapes in 1927 and today is known as the oldest continuously producing vineyard in British Columbia.

Tantalus was established in 2004 when Proprietor Eric Savics was presented with the opportunity to acquire one of the Okanagan Valley’s premier vineyard properties.  After tasting several vintages of wines made by the former owner, Eric felt this was indeed a very special vineyard. He, along with his team, established the site’s ultimate potential would be fully realized by focusing on a small, terroir-driven line of wines made from Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The old vine plantings – 1978 Riesling and 1985 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay became the backbone of the vineyard. Other varietals were removed and new plantings of the 3 flagship varietals commenced in 2005. The vineyard would not only have considerable vine age as its anchor, it would grow to have superior clone variation as well.

Tantalus’ eye catching labels were created by Tahltan, Tlingit artist, Dempsey Bob.

Telegramme Chateauneuf-du-Pape

One cannot think of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the most celebrated cru of the Southern Rhône, without thinking of Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. The Brunier family is legendary in its own right, having been rooted to the enigmatic plateau known as “La Crau” for over one hundred years. The wines of Vieux Télégraphe evoke the concept of terroir in its purest form: they reflect their dramatic climate, the rough terrain that defines the soil, their full sun exposure at a higher altitude, the typicity of the varietals with an emphasis on Grenache, and of course, the influence of their caretakers, the Brunier family. For many, La Crau is Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s grandest cru.

Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau" Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe is the family’s cradle and heart, but also the standard-bearer and flagship of Les Vignobles Brunier. Situated since its origin on Plateau de La Crau, in the southeast of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, the estate has grown, developed and matured on this vast stony terrace which, generation after generation, has imparted all of its character. Of the 173 acres that form the domaine today, 65 are dedicated to red Châteauneuf-du-Pape and five to white.
Only four wines are produced: red and white Vieux Télégraphe, from the oldest vines and the most complex cuvées; and red and white Le Télégramme, Les Vignobles Brunier’s second wine in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC.

Villiera Abraham and The Heretics Pinotage

Once infamously described by one winemaker in the Cape as ‘The bastard son of Pinot Noir’, let’s face it, Pinotage rarely gets a good press – even within a nation that somewhat naively considers it South Africa’s ‘signature’ variety. One can imagine the brief given to Abraham Izak Perold who perfected the crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault in 1924: ‘Professor, we want you to create a uniquely South African grape variety that has all the nobility of Pinot Noir but the high-yielding potential of Cinsault’. Pinotage is what they got. Abraham and the Heretics is something of a tongue-in-cheek challenge to those non-believers to accept the variety into their vinous lives.
