Rheinhessen
Rheinhessen has the largest area under vine in Germany. Muller-Thurgau is the most planted grape, you can also find Riesling, Silvaner, Grauburgunder for whites and Dornfelder and Spatburgunder for reds.
The sloping vineyards on the western banks of the Rhine are quite warm and and produce some of the fullest bodied Rieslings in Germany. There was a period when the region was dominated by co-operative cellars supplying inexpensive sweet branded wines; today there is a focus on quality.
