Priorat
Priorat is located slightly inland from the Mediterranean coast and the vineyards are situated deep in the hills on very steep slopes. The region has a unique soil called llicorella which is composed of red slate and mica that sparkles in the sun and attracts and retains the heat but also enough water during the growing season. Steep slopes and ideal exposure on often terraced vineyards make for powerful red wines from Garnacha and Carninena. There has been an increase of international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon.
