Friuli

A tiny region in northeast Italy shares it’s border with Slovenia and is home to the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC and Collio DOC.  Though red wines are also produced here, the whites of this region are some of the best in Italy.  The varietally labelled white wines boast high levels of acidity, with fruit concentration and alcohol to match. International varietals are popular but have thankfully not overshadowed the characterful local whites; Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia.

Sweet wines made from Picolit and Veduzzo are unique and delicious. Oak aging is common for premium blends.

The flat gravelly plain, Graves del Friuli DOC, makes light to medium bodied reds from Bordeaux blends.  For the best expression of the local red Refosco, try an Aquileia DOC.
