Lapierre Morgon

Marcel Lapierre took over the family domaine from his father in 1973 and in 1981, the way he approached wine- more specifically Beaujolais, was changed forever after meeting legendary winemaker/chemist/researcher/viticultural poet Jules Chauvet. His claim to fame involves how outspoken he was against the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the vineyard, arguing that winemakers should refer back to the traditional methods of Beaujolais.

Joined by local vignerons Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Jean Foillard, Marcel spearheaded this group that importer Kermit Lynch dubbed the Gang of Four. This clan called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification, starting with: old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and disdaining chaptalization. Although Marcel passed at the end of harvest in 2010, his son Mathieu and daughter Camille continue the work their father helped pioneer, introducing biodynamic vineyard practices and ensuring his legacy lives on.

Vega Sicilia Unico

Vega Sicilia is widely regarded as one of the greatest wine estates in Spain.  Located in Ribera del Duero, Castilla Leon.  It is known for its dense, complex red wines.  Few wines have such a distinguished history as Vega Sicilia, which was founded in the 1860’s.

When the estate’s original founder, Don Eloy Lecanda Chaves returned from France with cuttings of Bordeaux varietals, he planted them alongside the indigenous variety known today as Tempranillo.  Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) has always made up the majority of Vega Sicilia wines.  By the early part of the twentieth century, the estate’s wines had already become renown outside of Spain.  The 1917 and 1918 vintages famously took prizes at the 1929 World’s Fair in Barcelona.  The wine was not easily acquired; the owner decided who should get his wine thus creating an aura of mystery and exclusivity around Vega Sicilia. Eventually, the wines were made available to the world, but the status symbol that was Vega Sicilia endured.

In 1982, the estate was purchased by the Alvarez family, who brought with them their business prowess and resources while carrying on Vega Sicilia’s winemaking traditions.

Grosjean Petite Arvine

The Grosjean family traces its roots back to the village of Fornet in the high mountain passes of the Valle d’Aosta, Italy’s smallest wine region.  During the summer months, the family cultivated grapes and chestnuts on the slopes at lower altitude, stocking up on wine to supply themselves over the long winters. In 1969, Dauphin Grosjean, the father of the five sons that now collaborate to produce the wines of this estate, was encouraged to present his wine at the local “wine expo” and the exceptional quality of his work was recognized.  The family then expanded their vineyards and production.

The estate has now grown to encompass seven hectares of vineyards. The domaine is located in the hamlet of Ollignan on the border of the towns of Quart and Saint Christophe and includes “cru” vineyard sites.  After starting out with the traditional Petit Rouge along with some Gamay, Pinot Noir and Petite Arvine, the Grosjeans have planted other local varietals such as Fumin, Cornalin, Premetta and Vuillermin. Sustainable farming techniques have been in place since 1975: only organic fertilizers are applied and no pesticides or herbicides are used. Natural yeasts are utilized for fermentation.

Lindemans - Cuvée René Oude Gueuze

Southwest of Brussels, in the quiet Belgian town of Vlezenbeek, the Lindemans family has been farming and homebrewing as long as anyone can remember. Commercial brewing started in 1822.

Lambic, or spontaneously fermented beers, are the beers of this region and are among the world’s rarest: they are the only beers fermented via wild, airborne yeast – no yeast is added by the brewers. Lambics come only from the Senne River valley, near Brussels – a region about 15 by 75 miles in size. The unusual, demanding, and unique flavors that come from multiple yeast strains are unmatched in the world of beer.

Miller - High Life Lager 15pk

The Miller Brewing Company was founded in 1855, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Frederick Miller – one of many German immigrants to America in the mid-1800s. This initial wave of German immigrants also coincided with the new Pilsner beer that was gaining intense popularity in continental Europe. These original families like Miller, Busch, and Pabst (sound familiar?) helped bring the original Pilsner style to America, where since then it has become the worlds most popular selling style of beer.

Miller has since been bought and sold, and currently is owned by the Molson/Coors group.

Martini Fiero

They made an unlikely duo: a clever entrepreneur and a master herbalist. But when Alessandro Martini and Luigi Rossi took over the National Wine & Spirits Distillery in a small village near Turin, magic happened.  It was in 1863 that Martini’s enterprising spirit and Rossi’s creative genius were galvanised into a vermouth that has endured for more than 150 years: the inimitable Martini Rosso.  From the aromatic botanicals of the famous vermouth to the golden effervescence of the Asti wines, Martini’s influence has spanned continents and decades. Yet its essence will always be steadfastly rooted in the Piedmont region.  Martini is a true Italian icon and has become one of the most recognized and cosmopolitan Italian drink brands in the world.
