Sichel Margaux

Owned and operated by the four Sichel brothers and one of the brother’s two sons, Maison Sichel dates as far back as 1883 when the family moved from Britain to Bordeaux and set up their office; the original location at 19 Quai de Bacalan is where their current headquarters still sits today.  At that time, the Sichel family was more concerned with procuring wines for places like Mainz, London, and New York, operating as negociants and wine merchants.  Fast forward a couple of decades and the 20th century sees the family acquiring châteaux all over France such as Château Angludet, Château Argadens, and the famous Château Palmer; thus began their journey from wine merchants to winemakers. With expansion to China via the opening of another sales office in 2008, Maison Sichel has certainly made a name for themselves in the winemaking business.

Chateau Tronquoy Lalande

Located in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation and one of the oldest Saint-Estèphe wines.  The origins of the estate date back to the 18th century and it has had several different owners until 2006, when it was acquired by Martin and Olivier Bouygues.  They then embarked on a large-scale modernisation program which culminated in 2010 with the construction of a vast barrel hall and a new vat house equipped with a vertical press and 22 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats.

Château Tronquoy-Lalande is known for its fine site that stretches seamlessly over 30 hectares (74 acres) of historic outcrops in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.  Here Merlot grapes flourish and 52% of the vineyard is planted with Merlot, a feature which distinguishes Tronquoy-Lalande from its neighbours, where Cabernet Sauvignon predominates.  Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 39%, followed by Petit Verdot (6%) and Cabernet Franc (3%).  The soil comprises an 8-metre-deep layer of gravel and clay. The gravel ensures good drainage, while the clay retains water at depth which the vines can tap into as necessary.

LES FIEFS DE LAGRANGE

Château Lagrange has a history dating back to the Middle Ages.  By 1824 the estate was producing wine (120 barrels annually).  In 1855 Lagrange was classification as a 3rd Growth estate in the Official Classification of the Medoc.  Les Fiefs de Lagrange is the property’s second wine.

The vineyard is a large continuous block with two hilltops of Günzian gravel.  The entire property extends over 182 Ha through three appellations: Saint Julien, Haut Médoc and Bordeaux Blanc, which makes it to this day the largest of the Grands Crus Classés in 1855.  The center of the estate is the highest point of the Saint Julien appellation. The grape varieties planted are 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. The production methods respect the desire to combine tradition and modernity with a high density planting, controlled yields and manual harvesting. The classic Bordeaux vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Aging takes place in barrels, 80% of which are new, in air-conditioned cellars. Éric Boissenot, known for making elegant and refined wines that stand the test of time, has become one of the specialists in great Médoc wines. The wines are aged entirely in barrels, 60% of which are new barrels with traditional racking.

Les Fiefs de Lagrange offers the same structure and suppleness as the estate’s first wine, with the advantage of being more quickly drinkable.

The soil types and grape varieties are perfectly matched, giving rich, elegant wines. The plots of vines are tended with great care through every season of the year. Chateau Croizet Bages

The name Château Croizet-Bages dates back to the 17th century when the Croizet brothers, an emblematic dynasty of the Médoc landed gentry, founded this wine estate in the heart of the Pauillac appellation.  In 1853, the famous Calvé family, Bordeaux wine merchants, bought the property. In 1855, Château Croizet-Bages was elevated to fifth-growth status during the classification of the Medoc.  The estate distinguished itself once again at the 1878 and 1889 Universal Exhibitions by its wines’ quality, as displayed by the label’s medals.

Severely hit by the major grapevine diseases of the early 20th century and its owners’ successive bankruptcies, Château Croizet-Bages went through a difficult period until it was bought in 1942 by Mr Paul Quié. This renowned wine enthusiast and Paris wine merchant could catch a glimpse at this classified Grand Cru’s lost nobility.  Paul Quié recreated, little by little, an exceptional terroir even at the risk of reducing the surface area of his vineyard. Thus, at his death in 1968, the restructured vineyard counted 30 hectares encompassing the famous hamlet of Bages.  His son, Jean-Michel, took command of the vineyard, making it flourish by taking full advantage of this exceptional terroir.

In 2000, his children, Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe, decided to take part in the family wine heritage. For 20 years now, they have continued to develop the Château by perpetuating the remarkable work carried out by previous generations.

Chateau Angludet 2019

Home to the Sichel family since 1961, Château Angludet is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc, with a history which goes back to the twelfth century. It is named after Bertrand d’Angludet, a knight and lord of the noble residence which stood on this site in 1150.

Since 1758, the vineyard of Château Angludet has retained a configuration down the centuries which is very close to the original, 93 percent of the current surface area having nurtured vines for more than 250 years – exceptional continuity for a vineyard.  Surrounded as it is by Grand Cru Classé properties, Château Angludet would almost certainly have been included in the famous 1855 Classification, had the property not been broken up as part of an inheritance settlement. In an act of faith (given the property’s state of decay) and belief in Angludet’s potential, the Sichel family bought the estate in 1961. Since then, the Sichels have worked tirelessly to restore and, indeed, improve the vineyard and cellars, giving Angludet back the reputation its exceptional terroir deserves. Managed by Benjamin Sichel, the vineyard of Château Angludet covers a surface area of 32 hectares, all within the AOC Margaux winegrowing area.

Chateau Palmer Historical Palmer XIX th Century

In the 19th century, it was a common practice of the time to “hermitage” wines Bordeaux.  Bordeaux chateaux would add a little bit of wine from the Rhone – mainly Syrah from the Hermitage region  – to strengthen the structure and power of the paler and lighter wines from Bordeaux.  There are rare bottles dating back to this period, whose labels note the name of the cru and the word “hermitagé”.  But once AOC regulations came into place in 1937, this practice ended.

In the 21st century, Château Palmer came up with the idea of bringing this forgotten tradition back to life. Years ago, during a visit to a renowned collector in California, Thomas Duroux, the director of the property, tasted a 19th century Bordeaux hermitagé.  He was so moved by this rare experience that he decided to create a Palmer hermitagé, the Historical XIXth Century Wine.  This is an homage to the storied past of winemaking.  Today, the aim is no longer to simply boost a meagre “claret” but to give it muscle and create a unique wine, combining wine from Palmer and a small measure of a great wine from the northern Côtes du Rhône.

Meyer Fonne Riesling Wineck-Schlossberg Grand Cru

Felix Meyer’s grandfather founded the domaine in the late 19th century. He took over the domaine in 2005 and has modernized the winery and continued to expand the family’s vineyard holdings to include some grand cru vineyards in Alsace, all while staying in touch with tradition and respecting the terroir. Felix is a master blender and skilled winemaker; he blends wine from different parcels and ages his wines on the fine lees in old foudres, as was the tradition in Alsace.

Félix uses synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides to treat the vines. Cover crops are planted in every other row in the vineyards. Some vineyards are plowed, but certain parcels can be plowed only once a year because any more would erode the soils. He treats the grapes with the same individualized care, harvesting by hand and gently loading them into the press. The use of native yeasts during fermentation makes the process longer and slower, creating a more lush texture.

William Downie Cathedral Pinot Noir

William Downie is well known in Australia for making minimal intervention wines long before it became a trend.  His drive for excellence has seen him rise to the ranks of being on of the finest Pinot Noir growers and producers in Australia.  His Guendulain Farm vineyard is located, in Gippsland, Victoria.   In the late ’90s he worked briefly in a bottle shop that lead to a wine appreciation course, then enrolment in the inaugural Negociants Working with Wine Fellowship, in 1998.  He was eventually working for Australia wine icon De Bortoli, travelling to Burgundy and totally immersed in wine culture and winemaking.

Downie had been making Pinot Noir under the William Downie label since 2003, with Mornington, Yarra Valley and Gippsland bottlings produced by the time he left De Bortoli in 2007.  He now makes wine under his own labels, including from his home property, Guendulain Farm, in Gippsland, but he was also the founding winemaker at the ambitious Thousand Candles, with Patrick Sullivan (Jumping Juice wines) by his side. Downie also works with Jason Searle to produce the SOS wines, which include some really fun varietals and styles.

Downie is credited with having influenced other Australian winemakers to shift towards producing a purer, more fragrant style of Pinot Noir, an influence whose ripples are still felt today.  Downie’s wines are hands off, with destemmed berries fermented without plunging or pumping until late in the ferment. He produces elegant wines, without lots of extraction.

Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz

The Yalumba story started with Samuel Smith venturing across the seas from England to a small town called Angaston in South Australia. He founded Yalumba in 1849, planting the first vine under moonlight with his son, Sidney. His bold, pioneering spirit has passed through the generations, influencing each of Yalumba’s proprietors throughout the years; Sidney Smith, Walter Smith, and Wyndham Hill-Smith, all the way through to our fifth generations proprietor today, Robert Hill-Smith.
Robert led Yalumba into the modern era by cementing the estate’s reputation as an internationally-focused and innovative business within the Australian wine industry.  Robert’s family carries on the legacy set in place by Samuel Smith, continuing to experiment and showcase the best the Barossa has to offer.  Since 1992 Yalumba wines have been made by Louisa Rose and she has become one of the world’s most respected winemakers. Lou is passionate about creating great Australian wine.

Rosewood Patience Viognier

Rosewood Estates Winery & Meadery is an award winning boutique winery located on the Beamsville Bench. Family owned and operated, Rosewood is proud to produce 100% VQA Ontario wines and the first honey wines in Niagara. The winery crafts low-intervention wine, innovative mead, and local honey that reflect their individuality as artifacts of the Niagara Region.

The Rosewood story begins over 80 years ago when R.W. Roman’s passion for beekeeping and mead began as a teenager in Ukraine. After arriving in Canada, he continued keeping bees alongside his son, Eugene Roman, who quickly fell in love with the craft. Years later, during Eugene & Renata’s honeymoon to Niagara-on-the-Lake, the two fell in love with the region for its natural beauty, people and wines. Here the concept of Rosewood began, as Eugene promised his new wife that one day he would build a winery with her.  The winemaking is led by Ryan Corrigan, with previous experience in Napa Vally, Okanagan Valley, New Zealand and Europe before returning home. The team employs traditional, Old-World winemaking techniques with modern equipment to create elegant, textured and balanced wines.

375ml Brocard Chablis Sainte Claire

After marrying his childhood sweetheart, Claudine, Jean-Marc Brocard moved from his native village in Burgundy’s Cote d’Or region, to her hometown in Chablis. As a wedding present, Claudine’s father presented the couple with 1.5 acres of vines near the Church of Saint Claire and in 1972 the Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard was born.

In 1998 Jean-Marc decided to cultivate most of their vineyards using biodynamic principles, which is a step further towards sustainability than even organic viticulture. Biodynamic preparations based on extracts from beneficial plants are sprayed over the vineyard to boost the vine’s natural defences, thus protecting it from diseases in a completely natural way. Work in the vineyards and in the cellars is also carried out in harmony with the rhythms of nature and the lunar, solar cycles. Brocard’s Chablis expresses the pure quality of the chalky and mineral soil.
