Sichel Margaux

Owned and operated by the four Sichel brothers and one of the brother’s two sons, Maison Sichel dates as far back as 1883 when the family moved from Britain to Bordeaux and set up their office; the original location at 19 Quai de Bacalan is where their current headquarters still sits today.  At that time, the Sichel family was more concerned with procuring wines for places like Mainz, London, and New York, operating as negociants and wine merchants.  Fast forward a couple of decades and the 20th century sees the family acquiring châteaux all over France such as Château Angludet, Château Argadens, and the famous Château Palmer; thus began their journey from wine merchants to winemakers. With expansion to China via the opening of another sales office in 2008, Maison Sichel has certainly made a name for themselves in the winemaking business.

Chateau Croizet Bages

The name Château Croizet-Bages dates back to the 17th century when the Croizet brothers, an emblematic dynasty of the Médoc landed gentry, founded this wine estate in the heart of the Pauillac appellation.  In 1853, the famous Calvé family, Bordeaux wine merchants, bought the property. In 1855, Château Croizet-Bages was elevated to fifth-growth status during the classification of the Medoc.  The estate distinguished itself once again at the 1878 and 1889 Universal Exhibitions by its wines’ quality, as displayed by the label’s medals.

Severely hit by the major grapevine diseases of the early 20th century and its owners’ successive bankruptcies, Château Croizet-Bages went through a difficult period until it was bought in 1942 by Mr Paul Quié. This renowned wine enthusiast and Paris wine merchant could catch a glimpse at this classified Grand Cru’s lost nobility.  Paul Quié recreated, little by little, an exceptional terroir even at the risk of reducing the surface area of his vineyard. Thus, at his death in 1968, the restructured vineyard counted 30 hectares encompassing the famous hamlet of Bages.  His son, Jean-Michel, took command of the vineyard, making it flourish by taking full advantage of this exceptional terroir.

In 2000, his children, Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe, decided to take part in the family wine heritage. For 20 years now, they have continued to develop the Château by perpetuating the remarkable work carried out by previous generations.

Chateau Palmer Historical Palmer XIX th Century

In the 19th century, it was a common practice of the time to “hermitage” wines Bordeaux.  Bordeaux chateaux would add a little bit of wine from the Rhone – mainly Syrah from the Hermitage region  – to strengthen the structure and power of the paler and lighter wines from Bordeaux.  There are rare bottles dating back to this period, whose labels note the name of the cru and the word “hermitagé”.  But once AOC regulations came into place in 1937, this practice ended.

In the 21st century, Château Palmer came up with the idea of bringing this forgotten tradition back to life. Years ago, during a visit to a renowned collector in California, Thomas Duroux, the director of the property, tasted a 19th century Bordeaux hermitagé.  He was so moved by this rare experience that he decided to create a Palmer hermitagé, the Historical XIXth Century Wine.  This is an homage to the storied past of winemaking.  Today, the aim is no longer to simply boost a meagre “claret” but to give it muscle and create a unique wine, combining wine from Palmer and a small measure of a great wine from the northern Côtes du Rhône.

Meyer Fonne Riesling Reserve

Felix Meyer’s grandfather founded the domaine in the late 19th century. He took over the domaine in 2005 and has modernized the winery and continued to expand the family’s vineyard holdings to include some grand cru vineyards in Alsace, all while staying in touch with tradition and respecting the terroir. Felix is a master blender and skilled winemaker; he blends wine from different parcels and ages his wines on the fine lees in old foudres, as was the tradition in Alsace.

Félix uses no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides to treat the vines. Cover crops are planted in every other row in the vineyards. Some vineyards are plowed, but certain parcels can be plowed only once a year because any more would erode the soils. He treats the grapes with the same individualized care, harvesting by hand and gently loading them into the press. The use of native yeasts during fermentation makes the process longer and slower, creating a more lush texture.

Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz

The Yalumba story started with Samuel Smith venturing across the seas from England to a small town called Angaston in South Australia. He founded Yalumba in 1849, planting the first vine under moonlight with his son, Sidney. His bold, pioneering spirit has passed through the generations, influencing each of Yalumba’s proprietors throughout the years; Sidney Smith, Walter Smith, and Wyndham Hill-Smith, all the way through to our fifth generations proprietor today, Robert Hill-Smith.
Robert led Yalumba into the modern era by cementing the estate’s reputation as an internationally-focused and innovative business within the Australian wine industry.  Robert’s family carries on the legacy set in place by Samuel Smith, continuing to experiment and showcase the best the Barossa has to offer.  Since 1992 Yalumba wines have been made by Louisa Rose and she has become one of the world’s most respected winemakers. Lou is passionate about creating great Australian wine.

Malivoire Gamay

Since planting its first vineyard in 1996, Malivoire has pioneered an innovative, eco-centric approach to wine growing on the Beamsville Bench in the Niagara Peninsula.  Malivoire currently draws the largest share of its grapes from several vineyards comprising a combined 40 hectares. These are located within the Beamsville Bench, Lincoln Lakeshore, Vinemount Ridge and Twenty Mile Bench Sub-designated Viticultural Areas, which lie within the Niagara Peninsula’s Niagara Escarpment Sub-appellation.

Shiraz Mottiar is the head winemaker at Malivoire. He studied Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture at Brock University and was a member of its’ first graduating class in 2000.  After graduation, he joined the staff of Malivoire as a cellar hand and within a year he had been promoted to Assistant Winemaker.  In 2002 Shiraz was given temporary leave to take his skills to the Yarra Valley of Australia for a vintage abroad before.

In 2021 Malivoire was recognised by the National Wine Awards of Canada as winery of the year after it claimed a total of 17 medals in that year’s competition by a panel of expert judges in a field of 260 competitors, including the most Platinums ever awarded to one winery.

375ml Brocard Chablis Sainte Claire

After marrying his childhood sweetheart, Claudine, Jean-Marc Brocard moved from his native village in Burgundy’s Cote d’Or region, to her hometown in Chablis. As a wedding present, Claudine’s father presented the couple with 1.5 acres of vines near the Church of Saint Claire and in 1972 the Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard was born.

In 1998 Jean-Marc decided to cultivate most of their vineyards using biodynamic principles, which is a step further towards sustainability than even organic viticulture. Biodynamic preparations based on extracts from beneficial plants are sprayed over the vineyard to boost the vine’s natural defences, thus protecting it from diseases in a completely natural way. Work in the vineyards and in the cellars is also carried out in harmony with the rhythms of nature and the lunar, solar cycles. Brocard’s Chablis expresses the pure quality of the chalky and mineral soil.
