Cakebread Cabernet Sauvignon

In 1972, while shooting photographs for Nathan Chroman’s “Treasury of American Wines”, Jack and Dolores Cakebread casually offer to buy the Sturdivant Ranch in Rutherford.  The Sturdivant’s took them up on their offer and so began the Cakebread wine story.  The winery is a leader in innovative farming techniques and new methods of reaching out to consumers. Dedication to making the highest quality wines and a commitment to family has followed a continuum as their first small vineyard has grown into a thriving internationally distributed wine company.

2014 Chateau Grand Puy Ducasse

This wine estate’s history began with Pierre Ducasse, a lawyer with a passionate for wine who acquired land in the area in the late 1700s.  New purchases and exchanges enabled him to extend his properties until his death in 1797. His son inherited much real estate; which comprised about sixty hectares, of which nearly two-thirds were planted with vines.  Around 1820, he built the current castle facing the Gironde estuary, on the site of the house of his ancestors. From his marriage to Jenny Ducasse two daughters were born and it was under the direction of one of his sons-in-law, Adrien Chauvet, that the estate was classified under the name of Artigues Arnaud in 1855. The Civil Society named Grand -Puy Ducasse was then created in 1932.

In 1971 that new partners took over the operation and proceeded to restructure and expand the vineyards. In 2004 Château Grand Puy Ducasse was purchased by CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Crédit Agricole Group. The optimization plan for the entire vineyard initiated when the Château was purchased is now being carried out by Anne Le Naour, Technical Director of the estate, assisted by the advice of oenologist Hubert de Bouärd.

The 40 hectares of the vineyard are spread over three large plots sitting on silico-gravelly Garonne gravel of the Pauillac appellation. The vineyards of the property are neighbors to the north, of Mouton, Lafite and Pontet-Canet.  In the center, they occupy part of the Bourdieu de Grand-Puy. To the south, they are located on the plateau of Saint-Lambert.  The vines are an average 25 years old; the vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (62%) and Merlot (38%).

Whispering Angel Rose

Located on elevated land near Gorges de Pennafort, 25 km northwest of the ancient Roman city of Frejus on the Mediterranean coast, the first traces of the Château’s site date back to times when Gauls (Celtic people of mainland Europe in the Iron Age and the Roman period) used the elevated land as a lookout point, to spot intruders coming by boat into the Gulf of Frejus.

Spearheaded by Sacha Lichine, son of famous Alexis Lichine (wine lover, importer, Bordeaux château owner, educator, and salesman), he’s been involved in just about every aspect of the wine business, from work in the vineyards to the sale of the final product. He started his wine journey by working at his family properties Château Prieuré Lichinne and Château Lascombes during the summers of his youth and soon found himself leading American tourists on guided trips through Europe, visiting the finest restaurants and wineries in the process. From there, he dabbled in many different importing endeavours involving wines from all over France but most notably, Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Nothing compares to his acquisition of Château d’Esclans in Provence back in 2006; Sacha’s ambitious efforts to develop more seriously produced Rosé has paid of with a successful range of wines that include: Whispering Angel, Garrus, and The Palm. In 2019, Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessy (LVMH) purchased a 55% stake in the company with Sacha retaining 45%, establishing a new partnership.

Grosjean Pinot Noir Vigne Tzeriat

The Grosjean family traces its roots back to the village of Fornet, in the high mountain passes of the Valle d’Aosta where they raised cattle. During the summer months, the family cultivated grapes and chestnuts on the slopes at lower altitude, stocking up on wine to supply themselves over the long winters. In 1969, Dauphin Grosjean, the father of the five sons that now collaborate to produce the wines of this estate, was encouraged to present his wine at the local “wine expo” and the exceptional quality of his work was recognized. The estate has grown to seven hectares of vineyards. Sustainable farming techniques have been in place since 1975: only organic fertilizers are applied and no pesticides or herbicides are used. Natural yeasts are utilized for fermentation.  Single vineyard Pinot Noir grapes are de-stemmed before pressing and the must is fermented in stainless steel tanks. During fermentation, the tanks see two daily punchdowns. Following the completion of fermentation, the wine is then aged in French oak barrels for eight months, then the wine is bottled and aged for an additional 18 months before release.

Grosjean Petite Arvine

The Grosjean family traces its roots back to the village of Fornet in the high mountain passes of the Valle d’Aosta, Italy’s smallest wine region. The family then expanded their vineyards and production.

The estate has now grown to encompass seven hectares of vineyards. The domaine is located in the hamlet of Ollignan on the border of the towns of Quart and Saint Christophe and includes “cru” vineyard sites.  After starting out with the traditional Petit Rouge along with some Gamay, Pinot Noir and Petite Arvine, the Grosjeans have planted other local varietals such as Fumin, Cornalin, Premetta and Vuillermin. Sustainable farming techniques have been in place since 1975: only organic fertilizers are applied and no pesticides or herbicides are used. Natural yeasts are utilized for fermentation.

Campari

Surprisingly, Campari actually pre-dates the unification of Italy as a nation. Gaspare Campari created the secret formula in 1860 in Novara, Italy, and it has remained a mystery since. Campari’s first production facility was opened in 1904 and under the leadership of Gaspare’s son, Davide, Campari spread throughout Europe and the wider world. Campari has become a juggernaut in the drinks business and is sold in over 190 countries and has become an essential cocktail ingredient. Its vibrant red hue is iconic in the beverage industry and was originally coloured with carmine dye made from crushed cochineal insects but was coverted to artificial colouring in 2006.
