The Crusher wines are the product of a partnership between two established Californian winemaking families, Sebastiani and Wilson. The grapes are sourced from Clarksburg, an appellation only 20 miles East of Napa Valley, near Sacramento where similar diurnal temperature fluctuations – cool nights and hot days, produce balanced and concentrated wines. Unlike Napa, land is still relatively affordable here, so the wines offer excellent quality and value. The Crusher wines undergo wild yeast fermentation, from yeasts naturally present in environment; these indigenous yeasts produce subtly nuanced wines and express the local terroir.
Vincent Roussely is the fourth-generation winemaker at his family’s beautiful 8-hectare vineyard site in the heart of Chenonceaux, in the village of Angé on the Cher River, in the Loire Valley. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2007. He even transitioned vineyard work from machine and horse to doing all everything by hand in order to have the least impact on the soil, vines and grapes which he believes greatly improved the quality of the wines.
Catherine and François have a 45-hectare wine estate in Vallet, in the heart of the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation area. Growing Muscadet’s one and only grape variety, Melon, is their passion. They are committed to an approach that respects the soil, the climate and the natural environment. Catherine Boulanger has been running the family estate since 1991. Her father Jean used to manage the vineyard for 30 years. Generosity and energy are qualities we can find in Catherine’s wines (maybe because that’s the way she is too !). Catherine and François grow classic Loire varietals such as Melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet), Gamay, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc, Moulin Camus produces IGP and Vin de France wines along with wines from other Loire appellations.
The “two hands” are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz who formed the company in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz based wines from prized Shiraz producing regions within Australia. Quality without compromise is central to the Two Hands philosophy, driving all the decisions from fruit and oak selection to packaging and promotion. Two Hands’ first vintage was in 2000, after a modest $30k investment and starting with just 17 tonnes of fruit. The journey had started.
By the end of 2004 a state-of-the-art winery was built on the same site, specifically designed for small batch handling. To maximize the individual regional and varietal characteristics and to allow for greater quality control, every parcel of fruit, no matter how small, could be handled separately from crushing through to fermentation and oak maturation. The new winery revolutionized the winemaking capabilities and experimentation flourished, new varietals were tested, new techniques adopted, with a Cellar Door as a perfect outlet for some of the trials to test the market. As production increased, more varied sources of Shiraz from the Western Ranges in the Barossa were added to the mix and broadened the complexity and palate to choose from.
The Vietti family were well known vignerons in the 19th century and finally began to produce wine under their own label in the 20th century. Vietti wines come from Castiglione Falletto vineyards, deep in the heart of the Barolo zone.
In 2016 the historic winery was acquired by Krause Holdings, enabling Luca and Elena, always at the head of Vietti brand, to add a number of prized crus to the estate’s holdings, and be able as a result to look to a future with new, stimulating prospects, all while maintaining the family approach for which the cellar has always been known.
Without the influence of Penfolds, the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.
Penfolds’ reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.
The Rawson’s Retreat range of wines was named after the founder’s family cottage which was built in 1845, one year after he planted his first vineyard on the property.
The Moser family is one of Austria’s viticultural dynasties. In 1848, Anton Moser started his own wine estate in the village of Rohrendorf. The most famous descendant of the family is the viticulture pioneer Dr. Lenz Moser who, in the 1950’s, developed the high training system for vines. Sepp Moser founded today’s estate in 1987 with vineyards in the Austrian wine-growing areas Kremstal and Neusiedlersee. He ambitiously dedicated himself to creating exquisite wines full of character from best sites. Sepp’s son Nikolaus took over the estate in 2000- quickly becoming one of the first wine-growers in Austria to convert his vineyards to biodynamics.
