Botanica Wines Mary Delany Collection Chenin Blanc

Ginny Povall was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts and began making wine at home as a hobby.  She eventually made her way to South Africa to pursue her passion to make wine on a larger scale and she planted vines on Protea Heights Farm, located in Devon Valley, about 10 minutes outside the center of Stellenbosch.  Back in  the 1940s, this was the first farm in South Africa to grow protea flowers, which is the country’s national flower and Ginny decided to dedicate a fraction of her property to protea cultivation.

Ginny arrived in the Cape back in 2008 with some basic knowledge of winemaking through evening and weekend courses and plentiful background reading. Winning Platter 5 Stars from the outset and having to adapt to South African winemaking practices, she really has hit the ground running!  The vineyards were freshly planted in 2009 and 2010 and her winery is just now coming into steady production and from her inaugural vintage, she has garnered well deserved attention.  She practices sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention throughout the winemaking process.  The Botanica range of wines have as much personality as their vibrant and charming winemaker.

Brancaia Maremma Toscana

Purchased in 1981 by Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer, the original estate sitting atop the Brancaia hill, it was initially a place for their family to visit on holiday. The 20 ha site sported a house in desperate need of renovations and 4 ha of vineyards; a well-protected plot surrounding by deep woods, free from any neighbouring vineyards that have been sprayed with chemicals.

After their Chianti Classico (1983) won a blind tasting in 1986, it wasn’t soon after that the Widmer’s bought 53 ha more, located in Radda. During that time, their famous Il Blu was produced- a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. This blend didn’t meet the requirements and/or guidelines to be classified as Chianti Classico and the Widmer family found themselves part of the Super Tuscan movement, a label eventually granted by the Italian government in 1992 known as: Toscana IGT.

NS Spirits Co. - Blue Lobster Pure Soda Mixer 12pk

Inspired by and made for Nova Scotia’s culture of kitchen parties, storytelling, good times with friends and family, and that laidback Maritime lifestyle; founded in 2015 in Pictou County, Nova Scotia Spirit Co. focuses on producing quality, small-batch spirits at an everyday price.

Their core lineup of spirits; Fisherman’s Helper Rum, Willing to Learn Gin, and Blue Lobster Vodka were all inspired by an ad found on the door of the building that would eventually house the distillery: Commercial lobster fisherman from Ballantyne’s Cove Antigonish County is looking to hire a fisherman’s helper for the summer. Basic requirements: sober, alert, willing to learn.

Dolin Vermouth Comoz Blanc

The house of Comoz was established in 1856 by Jean-Pierre Comoz, becoming the second vermouthier of Chambéry after Dolin (where Jean-Pierre had been previously employed).  In 1881, under the leadership of the son Claudius Comoz, the house changed its production process of pale vermouth and introduced the type ‘Vermouth Blanc.’ By the 1930s, when the Tribunal de Chambéry applied for an appellation for its vermouth, Noël Comoz (the grandson) had risen to the president of the Union of Vermouthiers. The house declined along with the vermouth category in the late 20th century, closing its own operations in 1981. Production continued under contract for almost 20 years until disappearing completely by the year 2000. Today, the original recipe is produced by Dolin et Cie.

Fernet-Branca Bitters

Fernet-Branca isn’t only a digestive bitter, it’s a true legend. It’s formula is one of the world’s best kept secrets, so tightly kept, that since its origin even those who collect the spices do not know the exact quantities needed.Today, the only custodian of the Fernet-Branca secret formula is the President, Niccolò Branca, who personally measures out the spices during the production process. Fernet-Branca was also notoriously able to evade prohibition by billing itself as a medicinal tonic rather than a recreational drink and this greatly helped to popularize the drink in America.

Despite the formula being held secret, it is common knowledge that the following ingredients provide the unique and distinct characters found in Fernet Branca chammomile, cinnamon, saffron, galangal and bitter orange.
