Domaine Vacheron Sancerre

The Vacherons are arguably Sancerre’s leading winemaking family.  From their pioneering work in identifying and exploiting the region’s top terroirs to their leading position in biodynamic viticulture today, there are few if any artisans in Sancerre as exacting or as respected.

Great-grandfather Maurice Vacheron tended a few vines back when Sancerre was but a stop on a village road.  His son, Jean, was the first of the family to specialize in producing wine, paying particular attention to the influence of terroir on Sauvignon Blanc.  Jean’s sons, Denis and Jean-Louis, further solidified the Vacheron name in Sancerre.  Today, Denis’ son, Jean-Laurent, and Jean-Louis’ son, Jean-Dominique, have taken the estate to a whole new level of quality, championing biodynamic viticulture and selecting singular vineyard parcels that the family has observed for generations to bottle as single-vineyard wines.  Their goal is to highlight the uniqueness of each site and showcase the heights that Sancerre can reach.

Vincent Fleith Gewurztraminer Letzenberg

Dating as far back as 1661, this estate has been in the Fleith family for eleven generations. In 1973, René Fleith built a brand new estate which comprises approximately 10 ha, spread out over four terroirs in Alsace, France: the Steinweg, the Dorfburg, the Letzenberg and the Grand Cru Furstentum. Vincent Fleith took the reins of the estate in 1996, implementing biodynamic farming practices (Ecocert and Demeter certified) in 1999. Vincent is committed to Alsace, having only ever left to work in the wine industries of California, Australia, and Beaujolais.

All of their wines are aged on their lees for a minimum of 12 months and aged in bottling for at least 6 months prior to release. Producing both dry and sweet wines, Fleith’s range is everything you want for the region; Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and Cremant d’Alsace.

Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau" Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Beginning in 1898 with Hippolyte Brunier- a farmer with less than a hectare of land between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Bédarrides on a high-elevation, stony plateau called “La Crau,” the location of this landed prompted the construction of a communication tower in the late 18th century with the purpose of transmitting telegraph messages between Marseille and Paris. Although the land wasn’t thought to be suitable for growing grapes due to its high elevation (susceptible to all rain, hail, too much sunshine, and Mistral) and the fact that most of the plot was covered with galets roulés (rounded stones), Hippolyte made wine anyway and received positive feedback from his peers. With that, he gradually expanded his vineyards to 16 ha, and then to the eventual 70 ha it is today. Owned and operated in tandem with his wife Maguey, they retired in 1988 and left the business to their sons, Daniel and Frédéric, who have worked to expand the winery even more, introducing a new label known as “Télégramme,” utilizing grapes from younger vines.

Even before this, the ancestral branch of the Clouet family were well known as the official printers of the King of France, their name was Seneuze.  There is a document dating back to 1680 which is a request for a deed for the purchase of land in Champagne.   Today, Clouet farms about 20 acres of vines in this area that is the most famous Grand Cru village in Champagne for Pinot Noir.  The house of Clouet is a grower/producer house crafting limited amounts of a few different cuvées made exclusively from Pinot Noir.

Sichel Sauternes 375ml

Owned and operated by the four Sichel brothers and one of the brother’s two sons, Maison Sichel dates as far back as 1883 where the family moved from Britain to Bordeaux and set up their office; the original location at 19 Quai de Bacalan is where their current headquarters still sits today. Back then, Sichel was more concerned with procuring wines for places like Mainz, London, and New York, operating as a wine merchant but fast forward a couple of decades and the 20th century sees the family acquiring Châteaus all over France such as Château Angludet, Château Argadens, and now-famous Château Palmer- beginning the journey of wine merchants to winemakers. With expansion to China via the opening of another sales office in 2008, Maison Sichel has certainly made a name for themselves in the winemaking business.

Birgit Braunstein Pinot Vom Berg

Birgit Braunstein’s family has been growing vines in Austria next to lake Neusiedl for 400 years. She works organically and biodynamically across a wide range of terroirs, her wines are elegant and balanced.  She farms 22 hectares in the Burgenland, where she grows a range of Austrian and international varietals, following biodynamic principles since 2009.

Despite all the developments at the winery, one thing remains the same in her life as a vintner: the place and the soil in which her vines root and ripen their grapes. The schist, shell limestone, and crystalline quartz of the Leitha Mountains and the unique microclimate near Lake Neusiedl provide the wines of Purbach a special, natural ripeness and terror-specific minerality. The crisp, cool night air on the Leitha Mountain slopes lends Birgit Braunstein’s wines fruitiness, finesse, and vitality. It is with great joy and dedication that she follows her life’s calling.  All her wines are naturally fermented and bottled unfined and unfiltered with small sulphur additions.

The Flower and the Bee Treixadura

Nestled at the eastern edge of Galicia, the Ribeiro DO is split by three rivers. Coto de Gomariz is located in the zone of Ribeiro where the slopes overlook the Avia river and consists of 27 hectares. Shisteous, granitic and sandy soils, steep slopes, tiny yields and a unique microclimate make this spot ideal for growing the local varieties which include Treixadura, Godello, Loureira and Albariño. Owner Ricardo Carreiro and winemaker Xosé Lois Sebio have introduced biodynamic principles, and are producing great wines at great prices.

The wines of Ribeiro aren’t seen quite as often in export markets as wines from other Spanish regions.  It is located along the northern banks of the Miño River, just to the east of Rías Baixas’ Condado do Tea.   While Ribeiro has an Atlantic influence, it is slightly warmer than Rías Baixas.  The Treixadura-dominant white wines are Ribeiro’s specialty, characterized by fullness and zippy acidity.

Leitz Eins Zwei Dry Riesling

The Leitz family has a history in winemaking as far back as 1744. In 1985 Johannes Leitz took over the family winery in Rudesheim and has grown the estate from 2.9 hectares to 40 hectares and has gained national and international recognition for his wines all while staying true to his root. He worked closely with the Ministry of Environment to restore traditional terraces above Rudesheim in the Berg Rottland and Berg Kaisersteinfels vineyards. The impressively steep Leitz vineyards are blessed with 100% southern exposure, thus ensuring optimal ripening and good drainage which is needed for these complex and mineral driven wines.

Lindemans - Cuvée René Oude Gueuze

Southwest of Brussels, in the quiet Belgian town of Vlezenbeek, the Lindemans family has been farming and homebrewing as long as anyone can remember. Commercial brewing started in 1822.

Lambic, or spontaneously fermented beers, are the beers of this region and are among the world’s rarest: they are the only beers fermented via wild, airborne yeast – no yeast is added by the brewers. Lambics come only from the Senne River valley, near Brussels – a region about 15 by 75 miles in size. The unusual, demanding, and unique flavors that come from multiple yeast strains are unmatched in the world of beer.

Chimay - White (Tripel)

Chimay is the name of the Trappist brewery* that produces beer within the Scourmont abbey, 1km from the French border, and they have been brewing beer since 1862. Losing their copper brewing kettles to the Nazis during the war, the brewery had to restart over, but have since become arguably the most well-known Trappist brewery in the world. Like most Trappist breweries, Chimay has a house yeast culture, some may call a “super-yeast” that can produce exceptionally complex, and elegant styles of beer.
