Coto de Gomariz was founded in the 1970’s by a native Galician who had just emigrated back to his homeland from South America.  This area of Ribeiro in northwest Spain and specifically, Coto de Gomariz is the oldest registered vineyard reserve in all of Spain.  Wines have been made here since the 10th century.

Gomariz X is predominately made with the Albarino grape which is more commonly found just west of here in Rias Baixas.  The “X” for the name stands for “xisto” – the Galician spelling of schist of which this single vineyard wine which the soil for this wine mainly consists of.

Farmed organically and biodynamically (uncertified), this unoaked wine was one of my favourite wines from all of last year. Expect a floral nose with lots of apricot and peach flavours with a nice round mouthfeel.  A perfect pick for that lobster feast you have planned!
