Joel

Customer Service Sales Associate

Joel is one of the newer staff here at Bishop’s Cellar, starting in Spring of 2024. Joel comes to us with 15+ years of experience working in the service industry, honing their craft every step of the way. Having most recently worked in a brewery for the last couple of years, Joel is diving into the world of wine and is midway through the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers (CAPS) program. We’re pleased to have Joel as part of the team; don’t be afraid to say hello when you see him around the shop!

Favourite grape or wine region?

Gamay. I generally prefer white wines because of their delicate aromas and higher acidity. The Gamay can exhibit this while being dark enough to handle the meat dishes I prefer.

What’s one thing that people would be shocked to know about you?

I believe the Winnipeg Jets are the best hockey team of all time and refuse to entertain any evidence or arguments to the contrary.

If you weren’t selling wine at Bishop’s Cellar, what would you be doing?

Working as a bartender. It’s what I did before and I love making connections and talking with people about beer, wine, and spirits.

Joel's Picks

“If I could visit any of our producers/suppliers”

Try something new and old! In the south of France in the Languedoc-Roussillon region just outside of the coastal commune of Narbonne, Gérard Bertrand is making biodynamic wine. This region is home to some of the oldest architecture in Europe just on the coast of the Mediterranean sea, the sea that influenced western culture as we know it.

This particular wine is part of a new movement of wine making which is actually a renaissance of the original wine made from white wine grapes. How could one not want to go experience one of the oldest places in the world, drink like the ancients, and be part of a new movement?
